Help with PCM Problem please - travelling tomorrow

Hi there.

We're travelling on vacation to Italy tomorrow ...any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks, Rob

Our (03) Boxster has the Porsche PCM sound system fitted and, intermittently, it is playing up. Thus far the problems have been only occasional however, in preparation for our trip, I drove the car for 30 minutes on Saturday evening, and I couldn't get any sound at all!

It was fine when tried on Sunday morning, having been left overnight.

So, whilst not threatening a "˜breakdown'"¦.given we'll cover a couple of thousand miles, I'd like to see if there's anything I can do when/if the fault recurs.

We replaced a "˜dead' amplifier last summer (with original Porche parts).

Here's what happens:

"¢ Sometimes the system is reluctant to initialise "" offering a blank screen. This usually rectifies itself over the early part of a journey"¦hence not bnothering too much
"¢ In this latest instance "" when we drove the car to dinner, all was fine.
"¢ On returning to the car after dinner, we could not get any sound output at all:
o I tried all the input sources "" nothing from any
o According to the screen display, everything was fine (eg CD timer showing it playing).
o Tried switching the unit on/off.
o Tried switching the ignition on/off as well as the unit off first, then on.
o Selected the "factory options" and reset
"¢ None of these had any effect"¦so drove home (about 10 miles)
"¢ When starting the car the following morning, there was a slight flicker (waves across the screen) during the initialise process, then worked fine

I'm wondering if there's anything obvious which is expedient and would help - such as a software update? (I'd be pretty certain the car is running its original software revision) or any tips for other things I could try.

Unfortunately sound like the system is on its way out, the flickering is the initial phase sometimes the system will work fine sometimes not. When mine was playing up I was getting the flickering screen and no picture, but I had sound, this went on for a few weeks then disappeared. I tried all the things you did only thing that work was next day!

The system basically boots up like a PC and when going wrong it behaves in the same way. I have the name of a company that Northways use, just need to be at home and find it........
