Help with stereo wiring

Hi peeps. I'm having trouble with stereo wiring on my 944s. All the cables have been cut and i've no idea what each are [:(]

Anyhoo, i got out a multimeter and started probing but i cannot seem to find an permanent live feed... can someone shed some light on this. I can find the ignition live but how strange that there is no permanent live. Is there an inline fuse for the live? i checked the stereo fuse in the engine bay but it was fine [&:]

picture might help. Most of these cars have had their ICE wires cut and spliced at some time or other.
If you have a multimeter I would suggest that you remove the speaker grilles and do a continuity test on all the speaker wires so that you can label and eliminate all the speaker wires in the console. Whatever is left must be your power supply cables and an auto aerial if there is one fitted ?
You could do a search on here for electrical schematics . There are lots of links to workshop manuals.
Good luck and welcome by the way[;)]

I had the same problem recently but found a wiring guide on Clarkes Garage. Try that - it's helpful but unfortunately for some reason the colours of the wires didn't all match what was in the guide. But a bit of thinking about it and I got there in the end.

It would help to know what model you have too. I may be able to dig out my notes and scna them for you if you like.

From memory there is a separate Orange wire that comes up from the left footwell and the relevant wire is not part of the main bundle.

Strange I know, but thats how it is!

it's a '86 S as mentioned [;)] i have d/l the manuals but they don't make sense to me... I don't have the fader and all wires are cut.

i just can't find the permanent live.

William - i don't recall seeing any orange wire.. i have removed the dash completely [&:]

thats a bit drastic to fit a CD player isn't it [:D]

Have you found a electrical schematic yet ? I've got a CD manual if you need it.

You might be better off having the ICE supplied from the Aux rather than constant live. If you turn your volume down and then later leave the car overnight it could be an unecessary drain on the battery.

i have found the temporary/ ignition live and thought about doing that but i think all stereos need a permanent live to hold the tuned radio stations and keep sound/ setup settings.

The owner had a stereo fitted before so one of these wires must be a permanet live but it isn't giving me a reading... yes it's really bugging me, i thought there might be a fuse behind the dash.. but the the battery is in the boot... i don't really fancy stripping out the rear interior [:(]

i have the manuals from http://www.cannell.co.uk/Manuals.htm but i don't really understand it tbh

You've clearly done a pretty comprehensive job there ... if you can't find a permanent live (yes, you do need one) then you may end up simply taking a feed from something else. The fuse box isn't far away, and there will be numerous permanent live's in there. Just run a cable (neatly) across. And tidy those existing ones up while you are at it ... why oh why is it that previous owners always make such a monumental mess of stereo wiring?

(Just a thought. You do have the battery connected, don't you?)

Thanks Dave! that does help.. I suspected that thick red/ white striped wire would be the permanent live but mine doesn't seem to give out any voltage?? the blue and grey in my photo is the ignition live which does give out a voltage when ignition is on. I think the Brown is the earth.

Does anyone know why my live isn't working?

Cheers peanut - so my relay is broken? i will have a look for it tomorrow.

thanks for the schematic but i'm not very good with schematics.. i don't understand them [:(]

I'm not sure but I think the relay is activated by turning on your Hi-Fi . There is a built in timer in your CD player which after 5 seconds or so switches the radio relay which in turn supplies the 12v+ to the CD player. There is always a delay before in car players turn on after switch-on. This could be why the white /red wire has no power. It only receives power when the radio relay is switched which in turn is triggered by you switching on your CD player.

If I'm right you'll need to connect two 12v power supply cables and the brown earth wire

cool, i have two red/white striped wires even though one is thicker.. do i join them both together peanut? because the grey and blue are also joined together (ignition live)

the two browns are already soldered together, do i need to do anthing with them? i assume they make an Earth?

thanks for helping me [:)]

ps - does what you say mean there isn't a permanent live? i thought a constant live was needed to keep settings and stations

If wires are coloured alike it is usually safe to join them.

You can test whether the brown wire is an earth by using an ohmeter to see whether it is connected to the bodyshell. Resistance from the brown wire to a point on the bodyshell should be something around 0ohms.

yes you are right there does need to be a permenant live to keep the settings. I shouldn't join the two red/white wires together until you find out where the go. It might be that the thicker wire feeds yyour cd radio and the thinner wire is just tapped off to feed something eles that needs to be constantly live. In which case you can join them together.
I'd use the thicker wire only at first to test and insulate the thinner wire temporarily
