help with the purchase of my boxster this weekend

Hi all,

I have looked over and over and finally found a 1999 2.5 boxster I wish to purchase this weekend. Tried to read up on all problems that need looking at when I buy but would be good if youcould help me along. Got really disheartened tonight when my mates mate who deals sports cars told me to stay clear of the early 2.5 models? Is this correct?? The one I am hoping to purchase ticks all the boxes in my eyes:

1. two owners from new
2.full porsche history with all service and MOT's that tally up
3.good price within my budget
4.nice and upfront independant dealer (no pressure on sale)
5. HPI clear.
6. Only 65k miles
7. same owner for 6 years

What are the main things I should do when I see this car standing and on the test drive. I am aware this is 8 years old and some wear and tear will apparent. Please any help will be greatly recieved, I am driving 200 miles on Saturday with my wife and will be purchasing theboxster on the day if all goes well. Thank you all in advance for any help.

Yours "soon to be boxster owner"

Ian

Did your Mates, Mates Mate(etc) say why? [:D]

If the car is straight, full history, and you are happy then what's the problem?

Cheers Mark,
Me mates,mates............ siad the engine is very unreliable and thats why the 2.7 was introduced in 1999. This car sounds good over the phone and if allpaperwork is good, great. The only thing my knoledge of this model is basic and anything that can help me when I check it over would be a bonus. Are there any major things to look out for?

Personally, if it ticks the boxes for you then go for it. I wouldn't pay too much attention with regards to this early engine information. When I bought my Box two years ago, like you I had a set budget. I looked around for ages and in the end I Bought a 97 model because even though I looked at 99's and 00's with less mileage, I couldn't find anything that was as clean and well looked after as mine. plus I am the third owner from new. My car has now done over 101,000 miles and apart from two replacement radiators I have never had any problems (he says!!)

On the other side - my friends 03 boxster S engine blew up two months ago and it only has 23K on the clock. Maybe the older models are more robust now that they are run in??!!....

I wouldn't take to much notice of what your mates mate is saying. Yes there were a few reports of early boxsters and 911 having engine failures but these were few and far between, and now 10 years on or so any problems would of been rectified. I purchased a 1997 2.5 4 months ago and I also had the same worries but I now think why did I worry. I love my boxster and since owning it, touch wood, I've had no problems. If it ticks all the boxes and is HPi clear then your on a winner.

I have just bought one too. I posted several questions recently that might help you with what to look for. I got some good advice as ever from the people here.

A couple of basics I was told to look for:

1. Has the rear main seal been replaced? At that milage possibly the clutch might have been too.
2. Whats the condition of the plastic rear window like?
3. Is there any knocking from the suspension when driving particulalry going over bumps? Obviously there should n't be!

It might be a bit tight to get hold of them before the weekend but the Peter Morgan buyers guide book and DVD were also be £20 well spent
