HELP with trip - stuck in D

Hi
Im a new member and have a problem someone might be able to help me with. I have owned a boxster 2.7 trip for the last 2 weeks and so far have loved every minute until tonight!!

When i got home i could not get the car into any other gear apart from D.... which means is only going forward. Am i doing something wrong or do i have a problem?

Thanks
James

Assume that you have your foot on the brake when trying to select other gears??? Otherwise it's a call to your OPC I think.

Hi
Thanks and I have tried that. What ever i do, i cant get it out of D or even start the car. I have a friend who works for Porsche Mayfair... he believes it to be a linkage problem!

I have called the AA. They should be here within the next couple of hours.

It is most likely to be a problem with the linkage or the multi-function switch on the gearbox. The m-f switch tells the tip control unit where the lever is. They have a tendency for the contacts to disintegrate inside. A diagnostic check with a PST2 will show it up, as the fault will be stored in the fault memory of the tip control unit.

Thanks Richard
My nearest porsche garage is over 50 miles away.. In your opinion should this only be fixed by a Porsche specialist? I have a local garage 1 mile away who could probably do it.

The car is not under warrenty.

Manay manay thanks

Unless your local garage has a Porsche System Tester 2, then you will need to take it to a proper Porsche specialist. There are plenty of independents around who have these. Where are you located?

Did you also have a problem with your brake lights?

I had a similar problem a while back in my 2.5. The lever would intermittently stick in 'P' and 'N', although if forced, would move. My OPC couldn't help as they needed it to happen when they got it (they insisted the control unit had no memory). An independant diagnosed it as a faulty brake switch (my brake lights were also intermittently working) which was a £30 part to replace.

Richard is probably right though if that's not the case.

Good luck.

Sorry, I don't really know anyone around there since Adrian Yates-Smith passed away last year. Parr Garage, Eastbourne Road, South Godstone, Surrey, RH9 8HY Tel: 01342 892 911, are a good bet, but not too close to you. Paragon, Five Ashes, East Sussex, TN20 6HY Tel: 01825 830 424 might also be worth a try, as at least they are in the same county! Good luck!

edit: After Rodney's post - I am assuming that the lever is moving but the display won't come out of 'D'.

James,

Any update on your box? Seems a similar thing has happened to mine over the weekend and just wanted to know what it could be (intermittently in Drive the car thinks it's in manual, then sometimes won't budge from third - all overcome by switching off the engine and re-starting - so seems like a problem with the m-f switch as Richard mentioned)

Anyway, would be interested to know

I had my car transported to Paragon (E.Sussex) who fixed it within 1 hour. A small plastic rod had come loose... linkage. Aparently they had never seen the problem before. The part was only £15. Hope that helps.

I'm just releived to be driving again!

Thanks James, glad to hear it was a simple fix for you! Hope it is that simple for me. Unfortunately my problem is intermittent, and sods law dictates that it will work perfectly at the OPC.[&o]

Can you tell us where the plastic rod had come loose? It could be useful information for the future. Thanks

Sure

Looking at the invoice, is says: replace rear gear selection linkage. The item number fitted was 986.426.043.01 described as a push rod.

Hope that helps
