HELP !!!

Hi, this is my first post done a bit or reading here and would like some advice.

I used to own a 95 M3 the non evo version and loved it i sold this last july and bought a 2001 S3 which i have chipped and again i love but i would like to but a 964 shape 911 its something i have liked to own since i was a nipper as the guy down the road had one and i loved seeing and hearing it going down the road.

i would like a coupe ideally guards red or state grey and a normal carrera 2 version not the 4 it seems they should be as quick as the s3 feel just as well built etc etc, the audi should be worth about 15k so with a few grand on top i should be able to get a nice 1991ish car. What i need to know is how much do these cars cost to keep on the road ie cost to fill up average miles to a tank i presume you will need tyres every year etc etc i will only use the car evenings and weekends and dont need to be too practical but i spose someone can fit in the back bum one side and feet the other apart from oil leaks clutch and rust anything else to look out for? where does everyone find them for sale as there is prob only about 15 on the trader, are LHD cars any better than RHD apart from the driving position and price difference

Whats a good aftermarket exhaust to fit ? and how easy is it to source a rs steering wheel and at what cost.

cheers guys

Mel - that's got to be the most concise answer this year!!!

Taking the question just a little further Justin, I wondered if you expected to get an unbiased opinion by asking the question in the 964 Register??? No chance!!!

I've not had the pleasure of driving an S3 so I can't give you any opinions on the comparison but I CAN tell you that a 964 is a great driving experience - whether it be C2 OR C4. The LHD cars are better value for money - and, IMHO, better cars since the pedal positions are more natural since that was the way they were designed in the beginning.

The general consensus seems to be that you should drive a few before making a decision and get a PPI done on your selected car by someone who KNOWS 911s in general and 964s in particular. It's likely to cost you around £150 or so but it's money well spent to root out the 964 foibles that COULD cost you £000's.

Fuel consumption is pretty good for a performance car with most people seeing around 22 - 25 mpg. About 300 miles + to a tankful. Unless you get something special (which you won't unless you spend upwards of £30K) the 964s have a 70 litre fuel tank (some of the more expensive RS's have 90 litre tanks).

You're right about the rear seat but there is a catch - legally any rear seat passenger must wear the seat belt IF it's fitted - and it's pretty damn difficult to wear it if you're more than 4 foot tall!!!

Rust isn't a huge problem on the 964 sisnce it has a fully galvanised bodyshell although there are odd occasions when a leaky windscreen seal lets in some water and it bubbles the paint in the lower corners. Rear screens can get the same problem too.

After market exhausts are available from a variety of sources. Many are produced in the US (like Fabspeed, GHL etc. etc) and some in the UK. There are plenty of retailers like Design 911, PorshaPart, Jasmine etc. etc. Have a look at John Miles' 964-specific web site at www.porsche964.co.uk for some useful links and information. Bear in mind pre-92 cars can use a cat bypass too.

RS steering wheels can be had for around £200+ - any of the suppliers I've mentioned.

It's worth having a look at the Smartgroups forum too (http://www.smartgroups.com/groups/964porsche) which offers a wealth of experience from a host of 964 owners worldwide. Also Rennlist (http://forums.rennlist.com/) is a great source of advice and information.

I hope you find and enjoy your 964!!!

best regards

Dave

Had a non-chipped S3 in 1999/2000. Very nice.
Had a chipped Impreza 260bhp in 2001/2002. Very nice also.
Bought a 1990 964 C4 Cabrio in Feb 2002......OUTSTANDING !
Cannot think of another car I'd want to replace it with.
The 964 is certainly as fast, but a smoother delivery, not as 'on/off' as the turbo modern stuff.
If you play with them a little, they're easily up to 290bhp.
As advised, look at a lot, drive a lot & get expert opinion before buying.
Then enjoy one of the finest cars on the planet. Marvelous.

Rgds,
Jon
