Help,.I was wet, after days of heavy rain I was immersed in water, the computers all gone.
Can someone please help!
1. Is the engine management computer interchangable between all 964s, someone suggest we must still to the quote as in the original??
2. Is there any place someone can recommend where I can get 2nd hand?
3. I water seeps into engine is it a must for engine rebult?
4. What else do I have to renew besides the computers?

Thanks!

Hi It all depends on how high up the water was and how long it was in the water was it fresh or salt! I hope not! I have delt with a lot of cars over the years that have been in water and each one is diffrent. How high did the water go up the car or did it just get water inside? Regards Berny.

Hi the car in underground parking, and after few days of rain, sudden flooding caught everyone, around two feet. Sadly I discovered the incident a few days later and nearly fainted.
The water is muddy! Please advice!

I think in the fist instance - don't panic. Not suggesting you are but these cars are pretty well protected.

The ECU's are the same per car type eg an RS has a different one to a normal 964. Best is always to check the motronic box number and go for a replacement that is as new as possible eg from a 93 car. But before you do that you need to be sure it is at fault. I doubt anyone will offer to plug it into their car but I would dry it out, clean the connectors etc and then try again. But there are other control ECU's that could be a problem eg ABS, alarm, door locking etc. You should start by cleaning and drying. If you need an new ecu etc, then ebay is a good place to look, else see if anyone has a spare, and call a specialist or two. They often have some spares etc.

I think you need to work through everything that got wet - and then see which seem to work and what does not. You need to check all the fuses also - any electrical short should have taken a fuse out, and possible a relay....and the 964 has more fuses and relays then a nuclear plant!

On the engine itself - unless you ran the engine sucking in water it won't have been harmed.

Hi thank you for your expert advice.
You mean all 964 share the SAME ECU. I copied the no and it's 91161812404 on the ecu box ,is this the motronic box no?
Yes there is the tiptronic ecu next to it and the ABS in the boot compartment. A few relays besides the two ecu.

I hope the body work can resist rust after water soaked for days.

Anymore fuses hidden somewhere besides those in the fuse box?

Thank you ! Best wishes!

The engine dme/ecu is essentially the same within country, there were differences for different countries, eg california.

The tiptronic version has the same dme as I know it, just options off the wiring loom. The turbo 964 has a different set-up.

The ecu number you quote indicates a March 1990 version. For 1991, they became 964 618 124 xx numbers. 00, and 02. Then in 1992, 01, and 03 for 1993. At least that is what I have. But if you need a new one would I re-check with a dealer the car and version numbers before fitting.

On fuses - can't recall any elsewhere. The panel on the rear inside wing has a set of relays however. Again unlikely they would suffer here - the fuses would have gone first. Before you swap the ecu, check also the dme relay.

I doubt that some water will cause any body issues.... But it would make sense to really dry the inside.

hope this helps.

Thanks for the information, mine is a 1990, carrera 2 tiptronic, the level is just a bit up the real lights.

I shall visit the garage to see everything is getting on, and thanks again.

That's really unfortunate - hope you get it sorted without too much trouble. Keeping a car nicely tucked up in a safe place like that and then suddenly nature punches you anyway[:-]

Thanks everyone, I definitely have to get her revived, as I had the oil leak fixed two yrs back with engine dimantled. Then A/C system fully renewed three months back, the sunroof played up and cables renewed two months back. And just before this incident, I had 4 new adjustble bilsteins , and off I went to visit my mother miles away, then when I got back.....oooh!!!
Thank you everyone.

My advice for what it's worth is not to panic, dry everything out methodically, and then try to see if it works when put back together, most circuits fail when activated and wet, if dryed out first, many can be recovered.

Regards

Agree with that. Many electronic devices work fine after full immersion. Even my mobile phone worked after a quick dip in the bath, once thoroughly dried out.

Hopefully you may not need a new ECU.

The engine really shouldn't be an issue, as it wasn't running at the time.

Make sure you dry out all the carpets and foam underlay/soundproofing.

Yuk.

Hi everyone now it's the time to update the situation. After one month in the garage, my carrera II is finally on the move, and needless to say i am left with an empty pocket.
I have to replace the following:
1. Engine management ECU
2. Tiptronic ECU ( I haven't got that yet , the garage lend me one from another car )
3. The electronic devices that controls the raising spoiler, the central lock , the warning lights in the speedo and rev counter
4. All six motors that move the chairs had to be replaced
5. The ABS in the boot had to be repaired
6. Engine is OK but had to be flushed several times an so is the Gear box.
7. distributor had to be taken apart and belts renewed
8. Al;ternator had to be reconditioned
9. Starter diembled and same done
10. condensors on both sides and sensors all renewed

With all these done I have to say I had an early reconditioning to the car with respect to the low 68000 km milage or Bad Luck.
Anyhow the comforting thing is the car is on the move again, and Long Live Classic looking 911 Carrera2!!!!

good to see - and yep I bet the wallet hurt...But there is now a bunch of things that you should not have to worry about for another 10 years or so!

By the way - who repaired the abs unit?

Hi, Firstly, to my surprise actually delight, the 911 is better than before.
The DME I replace is an FVD chipped DME, i do not actually know what FVD ...the company stand for I presume it's a co specializing in improving the DME of 911. The chipped DME gives noticable performance to the car.
The tiptronic gear box is smoother than before and +/- from 3 to 2 gives a smooth change down.
The straight center pipe in exhaust gives a sporty roar like a little tiger, and the garage man said that will give a few HP increase, i am not sure I notice that, but I sometimes feels it sounds nice, however I think I perfer the original sound of the 911 more. Though it seems a pity to revert back to the original sound box.
The bilstein works great to soak up the bumps plus giving more confidence in tackling bends.
Everything seems working again, except for the smell by the water which I have to work on myself with carpet cleaner in future weeks.
The ABS according to the garage is rebuilt pump but he did not say where it's done.
The brakes are all cleaned and disc machined but I retained the previious EBC I had and it works great.
