Help!

Hi All

Went out for a short drive this morning and when I turned the engine off, what looked like petrol poured out from under the engine (basically looked like the car was having a wee). Does anyone know the the problem could be and whether I'll have to remortgage to afford the repair?

Btw, I'm a bit of a mechanical numpty so apologies if the answer is obvious.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I am no expert ....I hope it is not petrol as we could do with it up here in Scotland [:D]
if it is green in colour it is most likely to be coolant which is not a great issue ,perhaps some of the teckies on here might be able to help

Alban,
It is probably coolant. If it is, the same thing happened to me a few years ago. Gives you quite a fright, eh? I just re-filled with water up to the mark in the header tank. Because it's summer (?) and depending on when the next service is, you probably don't need to do anything for now apart from seeing your OPC about fitting a new header tank cap. The new one apparantly is a new design and solves the problem. Other posts on here have talked about split header tanks but hopefully it isn't that.

put your finger in it and smell and taste it to be sure. If its petrol it could start a fire on a hot engine.
Check that your electric fans are kicking in when you switch off and the engine is hot. If they are not then the engine temp will continue to rise until the excess pressure forces the cap to dump some pressure and coolant with it. Could be a sign of over-heating.

If the liquid ran out behind (inboard) of the rear offside wheel then its cooloant - there are two issues, one is a coolant cap problem, which can be solved by topping upo with appropriate liquid and fitting the latest design cap |(part number ends 02 i think), or you have a split expansion tank which is a common issue, you need to carefully examine the tank, both cold and with the coolant at temperature (caution !!). Replacement of the tank is about £400 at an indie
