Here I go again - 911 or Cayenne

When driving the 944 sometimes on A&B roads and waiting to clear the traffic ahead I wish I had the view that the Patrol gives past hedges and other cars. When driving the Patrol I think if I had the performance of the porsche I could clear that line of cars.
A Cayenne turbo might be the best vehicle for overcrowded and overgrown british roads as an everyday all weather vehicle. However I would imagine maintenance will be more costly (brakes and tyres) and it would use more fuel so I guess you are back to your original question.
I guess it also depends what you want to use it for.

The 911 (996/997) is one of the world's finest 2+2 GTs, with the emphasis on driver enjoyment, yet practical enough to use as regular family transport.
The Cayenne is a two tonne five seater with a big boot. Yes, Porsche have made it handle well (for such a big vehicle) and some of the variants are quite fast (if you don't mind the fuel consumption), but a 911 it isn't.
Residuals on the 997 should remain healthy for a while. Residuals on the Cayenne would be far more uncertain.

If Porsche ever do their 4th model line and produce a 928 replacement, then a 500 bhp 4.5+ litre V8 will sound fabulous. However, until then we have choices to make.
Anyway, if you have any 911 tendencies I suspect you will find it difficult to have a Cayenne instead. However, if you have deeeeeeeep pockets, then perhaps having both is the best option. A lottery win is always possible although, unfortunately, not very likely.
Having had 911's since 1990, I took out the first Cayenne demonstrator at Guildford Porsche last Spring and was instantly smitten. How could a 4x4 handle like that!
So, sold the Grand Voyager, sold the 996 and ordered the CayenneS which arrived June 2003. Also bought a Boxster S as a stop gap and ordered a 997.
My wife loves the Cayenne and it's now done 16k miles with no problems. Just sold the Boxster (while prices are still relatively high before the facelift), so I'm left thumbing a lift for the rest of the year till the 997 arrives in November.
It'll be worth the wait...
