Hi and a few questions

Hi everybody, I've had my baltic blue S2 for a year now, but I've just found this forum. I've spent a while looking though and there are some lovely cars on here. I'll put up some pics of the car when the weather's ok!

As with any car of this age I've got a big list of little things to do, thankfuly none of them too serious, just niggles really. Ive got a couple of questions so here goes!

1. I want to replace the bushes in my gear linkage as there's a lot of side-to-side movement, I've checked at the front and it's fine. Is it possible to remove/replace the linkage with the gearbox in place?

2. When I've been sat in traffic for a while, moving sowly and driving on the clutch a lot I get a judder from the clutch. The clutch is pretty new (maybe 15k or so) and feels fine the rest of the time. Any ideas what the cause might be?

Hi and welcome to the best of the 944 sites I've found.

1- Yes you can do the linkage without dropping the 'box - ramps and an ability to see with your fingers should do.

2 - They can get hot and also the fluid can get too hot - right above the exhaust, It wouldn't worry me.

A9XXC - Thanks, that's reasurring on both points, I've just changed the clutch fluid (it was pretty nasty too) so I'll see if that helps. I don't mind putting up with the judder so long as it doesn't fortell disaster for my (expensive) clutch. I may try some sort of heat shield for the reservoir too - will report back if it helps.

Another quick one, I need some new ignition leads - Porsche quoted me £180, I found them in PorscheShop.co.uk for £123, does anyone know of a cheaper source?

On my turbo my clutch pedal judders occasionally.... almost always after blasting along a straight section of road drag stylee, talking over xxxmph.

Got my last set of OEM Beru leads (for turbo) from eurocarparts for £75 IIRC.

I checked ECP but they don't list leads for the 16v models, so I've ordered from Porscheshop. I'm hoping they're going to cure the slight missfire I sometimes get under heavy load.

Another thing I'd like to do is re-stitch some bits of my steering wheel, the leather's in good condition but some of the stitching is missing. Anyone had a go at this? I've no experience of any knid of sewing but I guess just get some similar thread (quite thick and blue) an some sort of suitable needle and copy what's there already. Any tips from anyone?

I've sewn mine, firstly THICK thread, secondly strong needle, otherwise straight forward.

A long time ago my girlfriend stitched two 944 lozenge wheels and a 924 three spoke for me. I bought two thick curved needles and some very thick thread from the sewing department in Cole Brothers / John Lewis. Theres a knack to balancing the piece on your knees whilst steadying it with your forehead...

Missfire under load - do the dizzy and rotor arm, there was a thread about that a few weeks ago.

I've already changed those as they were a bit worn. I'm sure the leads need changing - I ran the car in the dark and there are so many sparks leaking between the leads and the rocker cover it looks like a disco!

Thanks for the steering wheel advice everyone, I'll have a go at that. It's the sort of thing which you'd pay loads for a speciallist to do and I'll enjoy having a go myself.

Just one last question, I promise :) - I changed the exhaust a while ago as the original was patched up and horrible. The new one was from an S2 but had no lambda boss so I cut the one out of mine and welded it into the original. The 'CAT' looked a bit different but I thought nothing of it and fitted it.

Having read around on this site it seems like there's a CAT and non-CAT exhaust available am I right in thinking my CAT is actually a silencer?

If it is then I intend to change the jumpers on the ECU so that I run the non CAT, non lambda map and disconnect the sensor. The MOT test showed that the car's running pretty lean (although CO was ok) so I've a feeling the sensor might be shot. Does anyone know if the CAT and non CAT maps are significantly different?

Thanks, I'll work on jumpering the ECU and disconnecting the sensor, see if it makes any difference. I'm hoping it's running lean due to the increased airflow from the de-cat.

PS. It was your car which inspired me to get the clear indicators [;)]

Wax the thread before use i.e. get a lump of bee's wax and draw your length of thread over it several times. This will make it very hard wearing.

A panel wirers trick to make wires go through looms easier is to spray them with furniture polish, this might work also.

Welcome and nice car (I would say that, mine's b/blue & pinstripe too![:)]) - the steering wheel leather fell to pieces - was going to splurge on an RS wheel until a friend pointed me to a local saddle maker who's made & fitted a new cover for just under a £100 - bargain - I wrapped the rim in pipe tape first to give a bit more thickness.
