Hi everyone, just bought my first boxster :)

Hi all,

Just wanted to say hello and introduce myself. Just today bought a silver 1997 2.5 manual boxster from a private sale. I've been looking for one for ages and saw this one on ebay. Its had 3 previous keepers, its done 50,800 miles and has a full porsche and independant history from new. Just a few months ago it had a major service, belts, fluids etc changed. It also has had recently a new clutch and the owner got the rear main oil seal changed as a maater of course. I've heard these have caused problems for some boxsters in the past. Last year it had all the oxygen sensors replaces a airflow mass sensor. So I'm really chuffed with it, picking it up next week. Its had the rear lights changed to the 2003 on the back but its got the normal lights on the front.
Does anyone know where I could obtain genuine porsche clear front lights for a reasonable price?

Thanks

Congratulations on your new Boxster and welcome to the forum. I too am a new Boxster owner and the first thing I did was to fit clear headlights - makes a BIG difference to the look of the car but flippin' expensive!
I trawled the internet and found the cheapest were on Ebay. I can't remember how I found them because they weren't listed in the obvious places. However, the sellers user name is 'ffnyl' so type that in and go to 'Sellers Items for sale'. However, be warned, he actually specialises in women's underwear so don't be distracted! A pair of clear lights cost me around £425 but they are genuine Bosch items and are a perfect fit.

Congrats on the car. My first Porsche was a 2.5 Boxster - great little car.

As well as ebay, try the PistonHeads classified section.

Thanks I'll try pistonheads. The guy I've bought my car off was kind enough to give me the wallet containing the manual, service book and all the receipts from new. I won't be collecting the car until next week when the cheque clears. On the last service there are a few pointers. One is that the ignition coil pack is corroded so I presume that will need to be replaced on the next service. Also when I was driving it I noticed the steering wheel was very slightly off centre. But when I let go of the steering wheel the car did not wander. The guy said he took it to the porsche specialist to get the geometry sorted but they said you need to go to a opc for that, is that true?

Everyones advice would be much appreciated.

Many Porsche Specialists CAN do the suspension - but the equipment is very expensive - perhaps this one just didn't have it?

Whereabouts are you? People will soon recommend good places to get the alignment done [:)]

Im in Northampton, I've heard the Autofarm in Oxford is supposed to be really good. I was thinking about getting the servicing done there as it isn't too far from me, has anyone heard of them?

Autofarm have a long history working on Porsches, and specialise in the classic models. An added bonus will be to look around the older models cars they have in.

Congrats on getting the car: sounds like it has been well maintained.
If you are any good at DIY you can do the coil packs yourself: they are about £25 a pop from Eurocarparts and you'll need six.

Thanks everyone for all the advice. I think you've sold me Autofarm I will be definetly using them. Thanks for that website for the headlights, can't wait to change the front ones to clear. Also thinking of getting a private plate to disguise the 'P' plate.
Regarding the coil pack replacements is it hard to do. I know on a coventional engine at the front access is easy but obviously with a boxster its a different story, anyone have any ideas?

The surface rust on the coil packs is quiet common, if there still working why change them? It looks like the previous owner has remedied any engine management issues with replacing the MAF and the O2 sensors so you should be fine.

thanks for that diagram. I think your right why change them when they are working. It was just noted on the last service receipt that they were corroded. I thought the MAF sensor has been replaced but it hasn't. The car runs smoothly without any issues. How would I know if the MAF is on its way out?

Usually an erratic tickover and or a flatspot through the rev range. They can be tested by a good Porsche specialist who has the right equipment and on occasion cleaned, but it's not always successful.
