Hi all

Just wanted to say hi and ask a few questions.

I am looking to get a Boxster in the near future and am not 100% about a few things.

Are the Porsche dealers any good or is it better to buy private? I saw in one of the post you can get lights (litonic) that you can switch from left to right is this correct? I am thinking of getting a lhd so when i move to spain its no hassle to take it there and along with the lights it should be ok for european spec.

Cheers in advance..

Hi and welcome!

I would advise buying from an Official Porsche Dealer or a good specialist - although it will be expensive it will be worth it for the quality and peace of mind. See Porsche Post or the Porsche magazines for the specialist dealer ads.

As for the Litronics, I understand they are not as easy to change from RHD to LHD as I, for one, thought. I think it means removing the unit first which sounds like rather too much trouble to me. However, if you're only going to do it once or very infrequently you may think it is worth it. On a new car they are an expensive option and, personally, I find the standard lights well up to the job.

Happy hunting......

It's very, very, very easy!

I've posted the full instructions here before, so a search will pick them up.
(And it's easier to do than it looks!)

The litronics are fantastic! Can't recommend them highly enough.[8D]

Thanks for the respone guys, i have been looking on the dealers sites and there is a marked difference in price from private.

Can you give me a rough idea of what the running coast are for as year please? I know it is a bit nebulous but an indication would be handy, also what would i be looking at for the services?

Cheers again

agree 100% having had Boxsters with both systems i can honestly say the Litronic lights are worth every penny.

running cost depend if you use an official Porsche dealer or a specialist. also depend which service you require doing (how many miles you do per year) and if you need new tyres. wheel alignment/tracking done +++

would say averaged out. the Boxster cost me about £600 per year. thats a guesstament as i've never sat down and worked it out.[:-]

For a new Boxster your 600 quid per year is probably a good guess. Looking at my last 3 year servicing and maintenance receipts including tyres and other consumables mine works out to be 610 on average.

Of course, excluding insurance, petrol and that extra 175 to the chancellor who clearly doesn't give it to the local authorities for road repair, but that's another story.

£600. I can live with that!!!

Since these are wonderfully efficient cars then high(ish) mileage isnt necessarily an issue, I am going to go for the lowest mileage possible obviously.

I take it a FPSH also something to look for as well?

Cheers

Insurance: £1,700
Petrol:£1,000 (5,000 miles pa Optimax)
Tax:£175
Tyres:£160 pa( 1 set every 3 years minimum, assuming no punctures)
Service: £350 OPC (assuming no extra work)

Then you have extras like pads/disks/bearings/paint chips/rear plastic screen replacement/re-gassing air.con/washing/oil top ups/big service (£550+ OPC)/warantee/any problems - and the labour rates associated with them.

And of course depreciation.

Worth every single hard earned penny I tells ya!

Depends on how old the car is. If it's a year or 2 old, then probably FPSH, if it's over that then it's arguable whether just FSH is required, after all the manufacturers mechanical warranty ends after 2 years. Taking into account the org. that's done the servicing you would probably acknowlwdge the likes of Camtune, Weltmiester (Plug for Alan), etc in a service book as being a quality job.

Again thanks.

I see there are a couple of inspections services on here, are they any good?? As i know the square root of f.a. about cars more so porsches it would seem a small price to pay for piece of mind.

The Boxster needs a service every 12 k miles, or annually if the annual milage is less than 12k. The service book explains this in detail, and you can call the Service Dept at the OPC for clarification. I'm selling my 2001 2.7 through the autotrader and all the callers have asked about the history, and are seemingly impressed that it has a full Porsche history rather than specialists after 2 years. While I would not get any more for the car as a consequence, it may help shift it over a similar car without the same history.

If you are to buy a car from a non Porsche source (private, specialist etc) you can get it checked by a Porsche garage, and even buy a full used car warranty for piece of mind. Off course, if you buy a car less than 2 years old, it will have the remained of the new car warranty anyway so that would be a reasonably safe private purchase.
