"From my own bitter experience modified exhausts on the turbo is very difficult to get 'right' - the challenges of achieving more power and a better exhaust note have cost me an absolute fortune!
A better exhaust note is a very subjective one I appreciate and after having a Milltek modified by them 3 times (inc. swapping from 100 to 200 cell cats), I then tried a Techart one and then I went back to standard for year until I found the europipe stage 1 which is perfect IMHO"
I've heard several good reports on this Europipe exhaust and it falls nicely on your budget.

It's also possible to mod the standard exhaust for around half an hour's labour and a bit of patience. Clearly, the cats remain untouched (which means power is pretty much unchanged) but the sound improves no end. It is pretty much the Carnewal exhaust but with the original catalysts.
Do tell. I've just heard the fvd exhaust and I'm suddenly quite interested
