Hi all, Just wanted to introduce my self, as Ive stepped into the world of Porsche ownership. I have bought a 1979 911 SC Targa, Im new to porsches as ive spent most of my time restoring vws and building Beach buggies, but would like some help on these few niggles.

1) A oil leak from one of the 90 degree journals on the oil feed pipes, it leaks right onto the exhaust-ive tried ptfe, so is it a leaky olive?
2) My high beams wont flash- probably relay
3) Speedo mileometer stopped working but mph ok????
4) Im trying to get a user manual so I can find out what certain mystery switches do, there is also a arm behind the windscreen wiper arm on the right (right hand drive) which seems to do sod all, any ideas?

Any help here would be much appreciated.
Cheers Darren

Nice car, just like mine used to be.
1. Your oil leak could be an olive but your description of exactly where the pipe is would help (preferably a pic).
2. It's most likely the switch as there isn't a relay unless you fit one. You can just replace the switch or take it to bits and attempt a repair, the switches are flimsy and break eventually or burn out but fitting a relay helps preserve their life, so it is something to consider.
3. Sounds like the gears are damaged in the speedo, you need to get a little kit to fix this yourself or send it to a reputable firm for an expensive repair, don't use 'Speedy Cables' they aren't and worse may follow!
4. Not sure about the arm you mention, is it mechanical? There is a 'bar' which bolts to the floor of the boot and to the skuttle panel to prevent vibration I think.

Hi Bones, what's this speedo kit then??? I had the same problem for a while, but now the speedo's packed in completely. I've had the sender in the gearbox tested and it's not that.

The stalk is almost definitely the cruise controller - I have the same inoperative piece of plastic

Careful removing the needle though it is delicate!

Thanks guys, nice to see you lot are as friendly and helpfull as our lot on the buggy forum, the speedo looks very similar to a early vw beetle one, and ive fixed loads of them, ill take some pics of the oil leak and the mystery switches, cheers all.
Buy the way I paid £5000 for this mot till next june tax till Nov and all works except spoken bits, and a little rust around bumper ends and headlight bowls, do yo think this was a good price?????

Sounds like a good price, providing you don't run into any major problems. You have rot in the usual places but keep an eye on the B-pillars too, they can be expensive to fix if they have really gone. Service it properly now with fresh oil in it every 5,000 miles or so and if it has the original chain tensioners on it, consider putting new ones in, with new chain ramps also. Fit a pop off valve to the air box and run it slightly rich. You can also fit a relay to the headlights to give them the correct voltage and stop the on/off switch from burning out quickly.
