Hi
Finally decided that it is time to treat myself to a 911
as a weekend run around. Should i buy a 3.4 or a 3.6? I have a budget
of upto 15k. I was planning on buying from a dealer as
you have some comeback. Is there a particular year/ model
to avoid? I have seen a 3.6 auto 2001 84k miles for 14k
is that a good buy. Are you better off going for a manual
or an auto. Is there anything i should look out for?
Thanks in advance
Clive

A quick look at auto trader just revealed more than ten cars under Ten Grand![&o]

Pages more upto 16K

Suggest you read the 996 forum - much good advice.[8|]

For me - If is not for every day use I would look at buying a classic Porsche[;)]

Hi, as I don't live in the UK I'm not to updated on prices but I think buying a really good 3.4 perhaps with a X51 kit fitted, instead of a cheaper 3.6 would be a good idea. And for a weekend toy I believe you'd enjoy a manual that much more. [;)]

Good luck either way.

X51 is called the Powerkit option from Porsche, a really expensive option when the car was new. It only ads another 20 extra hp but a lot of critical parts in the engine is replaced with stronger or larger ones.

as a weekend toy you cany beat a 993-i should know-i had one for over a year and it was Such Fun[:D]

so much more involving and addictive sound than a 996(which i also had for over a year)

luckily for you you can now buy a pretty decent 993 manual(of course!) for around 15k-i sold my near perfect 993 a year ago for 15k exactly!!

best of luck-you wont regret it

Hello and welcome

I think you have a good choice for 15K, and i would go for a decent 3.4 over not such a good 3.6, i have a 996 3.4 had it for almost 9 years, and i have loved it. I was looking for a 993 and maybe should have got one at the time as it wouldnt have lost so much as the 996, but i think i have been able to do more with the 996, like going to france on hols with my wife and 2 year old a couple of years back, also been to Le Mans with the boys and loads of camping gear and beer, you really can use it. I even have got a full sized road bike in the back, wheels off of cause. And i think the 996 is a great drivers car and are still very quick. I prefer manual but my driving is not involving much traffic.

Values for good 996s with good history i think will hold well if not go up a little over time, there maybe a lot out there but a lot of bad as well.

Good luck

Cheers Phil

You will get a very mixed view on this subject i have a C4 it works well for me, but some say a c2 is more Porsche pure. A good idea to try one of each.

Yes the discussion will be endless regarding 2 or 4, as Phillipe says try both out.

But like tip vs man, as long as it's a weekend toy, why would you want 4 wheel drive. ;-)

I had the same decision to make and went for a 996 in the end. I looked at a couple of 993s and one 964 but they felt their age, in a bad way, i.e. knackered. 15k would get you a good early 996 with relatively low miles for its age. They're a lot more modern than 993s and 964s. I'd be surprised if you could get a decent one for 10k, despite what you might have read or heard. In my experience they're usually very tired examples and big risks. £12k and up are a lot better.

+1

I looked and some very tired examples, new owners every summer.
Owner does no maintenance then passes it on etc.

Take your time, you will find the color and spec you want. There are load's of 996 out there.

I know I am in the wrong forum to say this but, Personally I prefer the 993.
I have a 996 because its still a really great car but I could not afford the 993 I wanted and the missus gaged it by the interior which is what I think so many people do.

Good luck with your purchase.

I agree with Richard,

The 993 is a lovely car, if you spend some time finding the right one.

You were looking for a weekend car and the 993 would fit this gap.

I looked for a short while for a 993 but did not find the spec I wanted for the budget I had. Also I drive my car everyday.

The 996 is dubbed as 'an everyday supercar' and I think it is. It's modern inside and I love the way it drives.

My advice is take your time. Have a spec of what you want and look for it.

Might be up for selling mine as I have seen a turbo. Are you anywhere near Cannock, Birmingham?
