ive always liked the look of the 944 but witch one to buy?

any things i should look out for ?

Just have a look through the buying guides for a start there are plenty about, but biggest problem will likely be corrosion depending on how well the car has been looked after, they are generally well protected and last better than most other classics but they are all going to be over 20 years old. For corrosion check wing bottom edges especially on the turbo and S2 where the plastic trim fits and can hold moisture and dirt, check inside the sills by removing the vent covers inside the door frame, check underneath around the rear suspension mounting points. Do not be put off by a car which has had new sills or the wing bottoms repaired if done properly. Avoid cars with sill covers unless you know what is behind them. Service history not necessarily by Porsche or Indi but check receipts for belts, pulley, and water pump. Belts every 4 years even if mileage is low, water pump usually every two belt changes so every 8 years. Regular oil changes and check for oil leaks from front and rear of engine, plus power steering leaks and also coolant, some pipes are hard to get to and people can ignore leaks. Interior obviously a combination you like but check for wear, torn seats etc and electrics all work especially the heater controls. Which one to buy depends on how handy you are with mechanics or how deep are your pockets, but try a few and buy the best condition, best history not necessarily the newest or fastest unless that is what your after. Unless you can fix it don't buy a cheap one there is no such thing as a cheap Porsche. Also don't rule out the 924S which has the early 944 2.5l engine and running gear with the 924 body.

Hi Steve, David makes most of the important points, and Simon sums up the first thing to look for on any old car! We need more info though. The 944 is a range of models, which are you looking at? What's your budget to buy, and more importantly run it, and do you DIY or need to pay a garage. Are there any big issues like insurance for you, needing an auto or a cabriolet, that sort of thing.

What they said. Budget is pretty vital and will determine whether you can afford a good Turbo, S2, S or Lux. All are good cars in my opinion.

Ignore high mileage absolutely.. Go for one which has been loved, not even over its lifetime, but especially in the last 4 to 8 years and has had a waterpump, front engine oil seals, belts, tensioners all recently. We have never had to replace a 944 engine due to wear. In the last year we have had to replace several.. Every single one of them had a reason, none of them were down to wear or age. Some of the worst cars to own are the super low mileage ones, better to buy one with 10 years of love and lots of big jobs done (as above) and perhaps has had shocks, clutch and bushes done over time, than buy a low mileage garage queen which will fall apart over 5000 miles of actually being used. Avoid a rusty one, unless you have family in the body repairs industry.
