HiD (Again!)

All,

I know this has been covered to some extent before, but I could do with some feedback. I was just about to order the HIDS4U Pro kit, but they tell me that they only have 6k colour temperature bulbs in stock (or possibly some 5k), but definitely none of the 4.5k (actually they advertise 4.3k).

Given that what I'm looking for is maximum (white) light on the road, and have no interest in the 'blue tint' of the higher colour temperatures, is it actually worth going ahead with the 6ks or should I look elsewhere (and if so, where)?

Any practical advice gratefully appreciated!

Cheers/John

All,

Thanks for the feedback. I had been hoping to get a little more information about the relative merits of the 6k/5k/4.5k options, but judging by Williams response the 6k should be fine!

Cheers/John

John,

As a rule of thumb, the lower the light temperature, the higher the light output. The 4.3K light is very white and produces significantly more lumens than a 6K light. The 6K light has a more bluey tinge and the higher temperatures are even more blue (and less light).

I bucked the trend and bought 4.3K lights and am very pleased with them. I think the reason that 6K lights are more popular is the trend to have "blue" lights - it does very little IMHO for the amount you can see.

Regards

Dave

As I bought my lights almost 3 years ago the only one available was 6K and to be truthful I did not notice a blue tint. The one thing to bear in mind is that the OEM lights are so bad even 10K would be an improvement !

Question on these HIDs:

My understanding is that 993 drivers only replace the dipped beam light. To replace both dipped and main you need two kits. Correct? And replacing main beam is a waste of time because of the time they take to come up to brightness.

But my problem is not with the dipped beam. I can see fine with that (eg around town and when cars coming other way). I want a main beam that illuminates the next 2 miles like it's noon on a summer's day![:)]

So what are you people changing? Do you see real practical benefit from just changing the dipped? Has anyone changed the main beam?

Thanks

Mark,

I only changed the dipped because of the problems you have already mentioned. TBH I found that I did not need full beam after fitting HIDs, although I did still use it, but it was a horrible yellow colour.

Most people just change the dipped beam. as this provides the maximum benefit for the time and money expended. The HIDs provide such an improvement that you find that you rarely need to use the standard main beams.

I am surprised that you are happy with your standard dipped beam. However there is nothing stopping you from fitting the HID kit to your main beams. The slow light up time is something of a fallacy. I agree they do take a few seconds to reach maximum brightness. However, there is sufficient light available instantly to signal your prescence.

I changed both main and dipped beam and have no problems on kit taking any time to light up - it is pretty instant. Yes you need two kits! I find that the dipped beam is very good but the main beam is v helpful at night on A roads
