This advice is not 996 specific but have a look at
http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=160493&mpage=1&key=HID𧋭
which may help you.
There are a few other posts over on the 993 forum on HIDs - it's a favourite upgrade because the standard 993 lights are particularly bad.

I can send you the PDF version.

Another good reason to join the club!! [][]
I have a 98 996 and mine had the yellow indicators on the front.
I was also looking to instal the HID and there are plenty on informative posts on this site and units being sold. Could also try eBay.
In the end, I wanted to 'upgrade' my headlights to the later clear spec so I decided to get a complete unit from Design 911 with the clear lenses and the HID already installed. I simply removed the old lamps and replaced them with the new ones. 5 mins max on each side.
However, their units didnt come with electic headlamp adjusters but I was told they could easily be removed from my old lenses and installed in the new ones. havent got round to it yet and never felt i needed to in all fairness.
BTW, had an email from Design 911 saying thay have a sale on so might be worth checking them out.
Good luck,
Rob
