HID Lights starting current?

Hi,

Does anyone have an idea as to the starting/pulling current for HID lamps at startup (arch up) As I have experienced the original 7.5 amp headlight fuse blowing especially as the outside temp has now dropped. I have checked the packaging but it has no tech spec. Do you need to upgrade your headlamp fuses to 10 amp?

Thanks

Hi 964 Driver,

I don't know the exact values that you are refering to but I do know something about Automotive Electroncs. The current you refer to is termed the "in rush" and is often a large spike several times the value of the normal operating current but usually only a few milliseconds in duration. The HID "in rush" value could easily be about 20Amps and it's duration sufficient to blow the fuse. The easiest way round this is to fit a higher rated fuse as you have suggested. A 10 Amp fuse is probably about right.

Hope this helps.

The start up current for most HID set ups is up to 20amps but the running current is as low as 3amps. The 10amp fuse suggested may survive but will probably be subject to premature failures. A case of try and see. (excuse pun)
