Just bought a VertexAuto strut brace,

arrived incredibly quickly - ordered on 27th Feb - and arived this morning, 1st March. so top marks there....but

Only annoying thing - UPS stung me for an additonal £27.30 'Import VAT'[>:] Item cost inc. deliv was supposed to be £93 GBP. ( so yes, [:)] top deal! )

The vertex website is pretty good, and lets you scroll down to specify Shipping to the UK, and gives a specific price - and there's no mention of this extra Import VAT charge.

Anyone else experienced this / what chance of a refund off the seller[8|]???

£27.30 'Import VAT

That sounds about correct as it would be 10% import duty plus 17.5% VAT. As drummerboy says that's the facts of life importing from outside the EU.

Ian.

The VAT is levied on the the goods plus the cost of shipping.
Try and use USPS (US postal service) for delivery as there is a better chance of dodging VAT, etc.
Fedex automatically charged VAT on my deliveries plus a £4 admin fee; I guess UPS do the same.

In 'Rip-off Britain' it is often the case that even if you pay the VAT imposed by the 'Revenue Men' things still work out cheaper than buying from the domestic market.
It appears to me that Customs haven't the facility to open every package so pick ones at random. I have had items from the same company at different times, some get inspected and have paid VAT, others haven't and I save a bit more.

Cheers,

Cheers,

On all my imports customs have never opened the packages as the paperwork on the parcels usually contains the 'value' of the goods. My imports have always had the correct value stated as the US suppliers are wary of being caught out. If you can find a 'friend' then of course the stated 'value' of the goods is another issue ( but this also has a knock on effect re. insurance value in teh case of a claim)

The other way to do it is get someone in that country to buy it. Then they send it to you as a gift. Two lots of postage but one is domestic rates. This is especially useful when the supplier will only post within their own country.

Cheers,

Fred

I think this approach is the only legal one, but I'm not sure it would work out cheaper than buying from within the EU.
You would have local shipping and sales tax
then shipping to the UK, anyone got a real world example? If there was a market for it I would move out there for 6 months a year and be every bodies "friend"

I've bought small things; relays, wipers, bulbs etc when visiting my brother in law in Germany, definitely cheaper than the UK and they have nice beer
