Not really necessary imho as long as the wiring is in good shape - I just fitted some super bright Osram bulbs, cleaned the lamp glasses (often forgotten when washing car as they are usually retracted!) and blew out any muck/dust from inside the lamp with some compressed air and they were pretty good tbh.

With the car being low and the lamps being old tech, they will never be as good as a modern saloon with Xenons but I frequently drove mine in the dark and the new bulbs made a world of difference.

I fitted them to my 993 and they made a dramatic difference, although the 944 headlights are far better as standard than the single candle power in the 993! I used Aceparts for the 993 bits - good chap and a really easy fit. I'd definitely try them first for an appropriate kit. And he's a Porsche guy.

TBH I would upgrade to Phillips Xtreme Power bulbs or Halfords brilliance first and see how much it improves your headlights. I fitted them to my S2 and the difference was quite marked, especially when on dip, lights are now much brighter, whiter and I can see much better!

Any they only cost me £16 off ebay...

If you are really keen, wire an additional relay with a direct link to the battery. The wiring loom will present a significant resistance to current flow and you may well find that there is significantly less than 12v available to the bulbs. (Around 9.8v when I measured mine.)

You can take this a stage further and get something with more oomph than the 60/55w standard-fit affairs, although you MUST run these through an additional relay as described above otherwise you risk burning out the existing wiring. This gives you VERY good headlights (and means you tend to grill any roadkill before you hit it ... ) which really really improve night-time driving.

Oli.

put the upgraded bulbs in my passat and you really could tell the difference definately one for my list of things to do.

+1 for Osram Nightbreaker bulbs and cleaned lenses. What an amazing difference, I can see at night now.[:)]
