High charging voltage

My 944S is acting a bit oddly at the moment, when the car is warm, and especially when running at higher rpms the volt meter has shown voltages over 14.5 volts. I believe the volt meter is fairly accurate having compared the idle reading to a multimeter and when it once reached a peak the stereo cut out completely and the car juddered - so I think it's fair to say that the meter isn't lying.

The over voltage can be bought back down by putting some load onto the system (demister fan etc). When switching on a high current drain such as this it causes a momentary cut out of the electrics, cutting out lights, stereo and so on. I've also heard the altenator whine break through onto the stereo which never happened previously, and it was prone to stalling when putting the clutch in.

I assumed it was the voltage regulator at first (makes sense!), so had RPM change it for me, this seemingly showed a small improvement, but the problems still persisted. So I've now had them fit a new alternator, but driving it for the first time this morning shows it still hasn't cleared the fault.

I'm at a loss as to what else could cause the system to over charge and am obviously wary of damaging anything. I'll speak to RPM when they reopen but would appreciate if anyone has any ideas!

Make sure that you are getting a feed voltage to the alternator, if there is no voltage to monitor, you will get maximum excitation of the alternator and max voltage output. Have seen plenty of dodgy or perished alternator connections.

Thanks Alasdair, I've never looked at the wiring myself and didn't know about this feed but that makes an awful lot of sense to me now you point it out.

Earthing? Maybe you need to go round all the earthing points, cleaning them up, replacing oxidised straps and greasing.

I had a 924 once, whose rectifier was failing. From time to time I saw MAX voltage and my headlamps turned into light sabres! [:D]
