high idling problems

hi all, i have a 87 944S. it idles at round 1600rpm. It is also hard to start. I unplugged the mass air flow meter and the revs drop to 600 / even stall. Doesthis mean the mass air flow meter is working, or is there a temp prob in it which mite be faulty?? any suggestions to how i would cure this? thanks all
