High milage 996?

Hi all,

Looking at buying my first porsche soon. Thinking of going after a 996 with 60 - 70K on the clock.

Any pitfall with this strategy. How bullet-proof are the engines.......RMS issues aside?

Thanks,

Adrian

Hi

I am not sure how bullet proof the 996 is, my 996 C4 Tip had 68K miles last October when I purchased it, and now approaching 76K without any issues. My 6yr old 993 with 76K miles on it had no issues either when I sold it a year later with 93K on the clock.

I think a lot of people get hung up on mileage !

Just MYHO

Better to have a car with high mileage that has been serviced and used regulary than a car with low miles used very occasionally and for little trips. Mine has just clocked over 130k and still goes wonderfully. Uses no oil (burning or dripping) and so far runs as it should. I would add that it has only done very long motorway trips so it terms of hours run it is probably no more than an 80k car. But I use it every day and often think I shouldn't but then why do I have it? If it were left in the garage I might as well not have one.

Endorse what Grant says...the beauty of a 996 is that you can use it everyday, and yeah so using it will drop the resale value but you didn't buy it in order to sell it on unless you are a dealer. The good news is that early 996s / high milers are ( relatively) cheap to buy and this is market forces at work...there are more used 996's about and the traditional used Porsche market prefers the 993 judging by asking prices . Having owned both I prefer the 996 for both the driving dynamics ( faster , lighter , better turning circle ) and the comfort ( aircon really superior).

Just about run in now I would hope and the life of the power unit - subject to proper maintenance and TLC - ought to be in the region of 200K plus - (based on a 999cc Fiesta at 120k and still pulling well) or am I expecting too much? [;)]
