High mileage 944S - 391k - which oil to use?

Time for oil change..i've decided to use mineral oil due to extremely high mileage - 391k -
any ideas which viscosity and make to use?

Is it using a lot? Is there any history of a rebuild?

The manual actually recommends many grades of oil for British climate all the way up to 20W50 for multigrade oils and SAE 40 for single grade oils.

Don't know yet how much it's using..only had the car for 3 days/100 miles..seems to be leaking a bit from somewhere but haven't been able to identify yet as engine could do with a good clean..
Got loads of history starting from day one, even the original invoice dated 1/1/87 from Malaya..£25883.97..
Head gasket, valves, oil seals done aat 314k by Paragon, belts done at 362k by Premier Auto Repairs West Sussex, lots of paperwork still to go through but "investigate non running" and "investigate poor running" are rather common on different invoices over the years..and the engine still seems to be poorly..[&:]
 
Could the dash be reading or have been reading in km previously for that mileage? Plus I agree with the above, 20/50 and I wouldn't use a fully synthetic because you cant guarantee its been run on one since new.

No 944 would have been run on fully syth since new. Perfectly fine to use fully synth in fact i'd recommend you use nothing but. The myths of the past wit fully synths are just that - myths. Modern fully synths are far far superior to any natural or semi synth in every way conceivable. They last longer, are more temperature stable, they protect better are more resistant to breakdown from chemical attack etc.

 
In my track car i use Motul 20w60 racing series oil. And on my daily driver I use Motul 5w40 (because of lower cost). On my experience 20w60 is very good choice.
 
Our old 2001 Mondeo 2.0 ran on 5W30 (recommended oil) at 380,000 miles. Contrary to belief, it used a similar amount to when we aquired the car with 80,000 miles on it. In the end, it's second blown diff (first died at 180k) saw the death/breaking of the car.

So I'd say whatever the manual recommends. The problem with most 20W50 these days IMO is they are are of very low specs (in terms of API ratings etc) full of seal swellers compared to what they once were unless you go and splash the cash on something quite fancy.

On that basis, I'd personally go for a 15W40 or whatever the invoices say the car was recently ran on.
