High Oil pressure

Hello All, has anyone got any good pointers where to start, When the ignition is turned on the oil pressure needle at the bottom as norm, start engine and it goes off the scale, drive it about and still 5+(off the scale) ??

1985 944 lux 2.5 oval dash

Thanks

Dave

If I remember correctly if the needle is always at max, the wire is not connected to the sender.

will it only go up once started if a wire was off ?, as the needle is down when ignition is on but not started.

Thanks

I would change your oil pressure sender mate. It should read about 4.5 - 5 bar when idling on start up and whilst motoring and around 2.5 bar idling when hot.

Thanks I was thinking of that, but i wasnt sure if there was anyway of testing it before splashing out £35+

Thanks

It could of course be the sender or the guage but in my case the sender was defective. The 'specialist' ( big quotes there) fitted 2 defective replacement pattern senders I.E euro car parts style before in the end I had to fork out for a Porsche one which was very expensive ( 75 I think) but worked.

Regards Mas

I've also heard that it is a trick played by unscrupulous dealers to suggest a healthy engine - looks fine until you investigate a little bit further, like it doesn't drop at idle.
Probably the sender or the gauge though.

Correct me if im wrong ( I often am) by all means but he has said it happens with the engine running. If it was the wire removal techique then it would shoot to the top when the ignition was turned on ? not when the engine ran.

Regards Mas

You're right if the wire was off it would indeed start right at the top.

I'd suspect its the sender, gauge very rarely goes wrong, but it can go wrong, see if you can get hold of a know working 2nd hand sender and try it to make sure before you pull out money for a new one

Open circuit (no wire) or a poor earth will give a max reading all the time.
As Mas says (I didn't read the first post properly) if the gauge is at 0 with the ignition on but max when started then you could put money on it being the sender. I had exactly that a few years back.
I believe the sender is fairly inexpensive and a DIY job if you are that way inclined.

many thanks, I didnt get the motor after all, when i went back, I discovered other things wrong.

high oil pressure reading,
Battery drain down over 3 day period(with new battery)
