High Pitched noise from Engine Bay

Hi

Just been out for an hour in the 44 Turbo and whilst opening the garage door to put it away for the night, I could hear a whining noise a little like an alarm going off under the bonnet?

On opening the bonnet noise increases and is coming from back of engine bay. Does really sound like an alarm, but guessing air escaping or water at high temp causing noise.

Pouring with rain at the moment and engine is too hot to start poking around, so will leave it till morning to investigate further.

A tough one for any one to diagnose with my rubbish explanation and not seeing the car but has anyone ever had similair experience so I can maybe make a head start on diagnosing the problem.

Gets me out of DIY for tomorrow as I need to poke around the engine bay. Hopefully it has gone away by tomorrow.

Cheers for any thoughts

does sound like steam esacping . You'll know in the morning when you remove the rad cap because there will be no pressure escaping and some water missing .
Do you drive the last 2-3 miles off turbo ? to allow the turbo to cool down before switch off ? Also if shes hot both of the electric fans should still be going when you left the garage. If not then the temp will climb quickly on switch off and something will blow.

Was this with the engine running or switched off ?
Isn't there a thermostatically controlled pump providing coolant to the turbo which continues after the engine has been turned off ?
Could it have been this you heard if you had been giving it some beans [:)] ?

On approaching home I always drive off boost for the last few miles. After switching the engine off in garage this pump usually continues for about 23secs, if thats any help.

Hi All

And thanks for your replies so far.

Car was driven very sympathetically for last few miles and the noise was only apparant whilst engine was running. Stopped when I stopped the engine and started again when running the car again.

Will investiagte further today.

Was a lot lowder than the coolant pump that runs on for 30 secs for the Turbo.

Was more like an alarm!!! It was loud.[]

I will keep looking

cheers again

Does it go away if you press the clutch pedal?

Lee, Let me know if you want me to take a look.

Hi Mike will get the car out now see if it is still doing it.

If not I will ring you

Cheers

Does the sound change when you move the heater control?

If it does then it is probably the diaphragm in the disk valve

nice one Sherlock ! I was thinking along similar lines myself . I read somewhere that the valves made for the Mini are metal rather than plastic and a better substitute.

Mike I will change your name to Einstein [:D]

That is exactly what it is. When you go to hot it stops turn knob to cold noise starts again.

So new Heater control valve me thinks.

Thanks again Mike [;)]

quote "I used an Audi 5000 valve in my 928 and in my 944S2, got one from NAPA and one from Autozone. Different designs but both were compatible and have worked very well."

Can't copy paste on this forum very easily but if you search for `skinny on heater valve' you'll find an interesting discussion on these valves
