High pitched whine in 5th gear

I tried an 88 944 today but when placing it in 5th whilst driving a really high pitched hine is evident. This in only in 5th.

Is this something that good gearbox oil would solve or is it systematic of a knackered gearbox.

Has anybody experienced this before?

cheers

My old 88' Lux did this this, started in 5th then 4th then 3rd then no drive, it needed a new box.

I was told that 5th is the highest up in the box so if the oil level is low then it will start whining in 5th first but this is just what I've been told I don't know if any truth in it at all!

They all can whine a bit in 5th I understand and many swear by using Swepco or Redline gear oil.

Mine didnt but I understand the weak part of the box is a pinion bearing.

I also could be a torque tube bearing but dont quote me.

Try a search.

There is no whine in first through fourth so i would assume i can discount torque tube. Will check oil level before removing to see if low - can anybody confirm that 5th is the first to whine if oil is low as this could be a quick fix.

cheers Elliot
