high rev gear change on 2.5 tip

Hello all,

Just wondering if anyone can shed light on my 2.5 tip gear box.... over this last couple of months I've had to use it alot less (it's doing 3m runs to the train station and back since a job change) and its started holding 3rd almost to the red-line when driving it "hard" (well - not hard as such, just a bit more aggressively than around town). Makes for a pretty exciting drive [8D], but am wondering if something could've gone pop in it?

Chatted to my mechanic just now and he said it could be a "problem with pressures" in the gearbox and we'd probably need to talk to an auto specialist [:-] - so I thought I'd just ask around to see if this was familiar to anyone?

thanks for any help! Cheers!

Andy

Hi Andy,

I also have a 2.5 tip. If I remember correctly, the gearbox has 5 different mappings. If it senses you are driving like an old lady, it will go to the more economical mapping and change up the gears quicker and change down later.....if however, you are being aggresssive and flooring it, it will change to the most aggressive mapping, the gearbox will stay in a lower gear for longer (into the red zone) and change down faster for better engine braking.

So it seems like your 'box is acting normally.

Hi Rodney - thanks for that (quick reply!) - I have got this nasty feeling that it's me driving it less and therefore differently and jumping to the wrong conclusions (maybe I'm making it up!) - but it just feels different (even the missus said as much and she's as switched onto this sort of thing as a sponge)

(I even tried changing out of my new Dc Martin boots that I bought as I thought that it could be me being a little clodhopper-ish).

Am heartened to find that no-one else's reported similar (that I can find) on the forums, so it can't be a common problem, so is more likely me being daft.

Think I'll take it for a drive tonight and give it a good kicking - see what it does.....

thanks tho Rod - much appreciate the input (am really hoping you're right)

Cheers!

Andy

I don't know how you got on with your test run tonight but as you are only using it for a 3 mile commute run now it is possible that its holding on to the gears because the engine is not up to full working temperature. My Tip g/box has always held on to the lower gears for the first few miles especially on a cold morning.

Hope all is well.

Iain,

Good point...when you've just started your car, the tip' 'box will try and get the engine up to full temperature (80-90c) as quickly as possible to minimize engine wear, hence it stays in lower gears for longer than usual........(although you should try and avoid getting it past 4000 revs before the engine is fully warmed up)...However I'm not sure it would hold it to the red line in third under this mapping, seems a bit excessive, I think that would be as a result of general 'spirited driving' by Andy.[;)]
