High - very high - mileage 924S

This weekend, I finally collected the 924S I bought off Ebay recently. Bought it to use as a track car and fortunately, its got a few interesting bits already fitted such as grooved discs, uprated anti roll bars, K&N filter etc and it drives nicely - feels strong and fast. It was advertised as having done 72000 miles and the owner gave me a huge ring binder full of old MOTs, invoices, service history etc. So I sat down tonight and started to browse through this starting with the most recent paperwork and working backwards. Can you imagine how surprised I was to find that the old MOTs quickly show that the car has in fact gone 'round the clock' and has actually covered 172,000? Hmm... not good. Carried on browsing through the comprehensive collection of invoices and old MOTs and if I was surprised before, I'm stunned now: the paperwork shows that the car has actually gone round the clock again - 272,000 miles! On the bright side, the car was cheap (£465) and the service history is comprehensive, vast, thorough and shows a very well cared for car. However, I'm not sure where this leaves my track car plans, bearing in mind how hard that engine is going to be worked. Any thoughts?

It's a Porsche, should be nicely run in soon.

Surely some sign of engine rebuild in this vast history you have?

Believe it or not, that mileage is not unusual. The 944 forum had a thread on this subject some time ago..

Some years ago I nealy bought a 944S2 with over 250K miles on it and no signs of wear. I knew the specialist who looked after the car and they assured me that it was absolutely fine mainly because it had been used for a lot of motorway miles over long distances. That is the secret. A car that has been used for short, stop/start jouneys in London can be worn out after 100K or so but one that has had long stress free miles will go far better.

Anyway, good luck. The 924S is a superb car but one point, if you are going to use it for track days, fit a rear anti roll bar.

It has probably still got the 'RUNNING IN - PLEASE PASS' sign on the rear window.
My 924S has done 168,000 miles and still maintains full oil pressure, runs beautifully.

Cheap motor, give it some stick.[:)][:)]

Cheers,

Thanks -thats re-assuring. Funny thing is, when I first drove it, I thought to myself how nice and tight it felt and put this down to it only having covered 72K.
Remember an episode of 'Only Fools and Horses' when Trigger talks about his roadsweeper's brush? He says he's had the same brush for 20 years and its only had 5 new handles and 12 new heads... well I think my 924S is heading that way because the service history shows just about everything other than the block and gearbox have been replaced.

I know this car - used to belong to a chap called Ian Johnston

- he stripped it out, fitted 968 suspension & brakes & ran it as a track car.

then emigrated to Australia - some chap bought the car & returned it to a standard spec [:(] (as far as I know, it is a 170k car)

Yep thats the one, it didnt have 968 supension /brakes they were the 944 turbo Koni M474 set up. I bought them along with the bucket seats !! Shame it was put back to standard as it had fixed perspex lights and roof panel and would'nt have taken much to turn into a good track toy !!! As i remember once the standard suspension was fitted it did'nt seem to sit quite right at the front ??

Yes thats the very car. I'm sure you're right - it had 968 suspension etc. It still has much thicker anti-roll bars - presumably 968: actually look a bit too thick for its current standard suspension set up. As you say, the standard suspension has been re-fitted and the previous owner warned me that it had been practically thrown on and needed checking. I'll be changing most of it anyway.
It still has its grooved discs and a K & N air filter.
It needs a little work but is quite a good basis for a trackcar. As you say, pity it no longer has the 968 suspension etc.
