HOLD on vehicles with manual transmission
- Engine is running.
- Hold the vehicle securely on the slope with the footbrake.
- Press the clutch pedal down fully.
- Engage a gear corresponding to the direction of travel up the slope (1st gear or reverse gear).
- Release the footbrake while keeping the clutch pedal pressed.
The vehicle is held on the slope to facilitate driving off and prevent it from rolling back. - Drive off as usual.
The HOLD function is not activated in vehicles with manual transmission under the following conditions:
- Clutch not pressed.
- Vehicle not stationary.
- Engine switched off manually.
- On gradients of less than 5 %.
- If the driver door is opened and the driver seat belt is not fastened.
However, the hold function isn't available on the GT4

Using the electronic handbrake is the way to go. Engage the handbrake then try to move off as normal with it engaged, the system will automatically release for you - you don't need to disengage the handbrake.
Fortunately both my cars - a 987.2 CS and a GR Yaris - have a proper manual handbrake, and that on the GRY is actually set up so that you can execute a handbrake turn [the rear drive is disconnected] without getting a handbrake warning light and signal!
