Holes in air box?

Hi,

I have been reading that by drilling holes in your air box you get my power & sound is this true ? I am a little concerned because surely this will effect the mixture and possibly make the engine run lean ? also what about debris going in ?

According to various articles and threads on this the only gain from drilling your airbox is a slight increase on intake 'gasping'.

I have drilled mine and have not noticed any difference in running.

For more noise either replace your primary or secondary silencer. I've replaced my secondary with a £80 g-pipe and I think it sounds the dogs (so much so I drove through a tunnel twice this morning cause it gave me goose pimples) but some people think it sounds to obtrusive.

If you want to hear what it will sound like, remove the front airbox cover and tape your air filter on, then go for a drive.

I have a G pipe, absolutely recommended, pops and bangs on over run, nice and loud if you want it, reasonably quite if you just take it easy.

You wouldn't ingest any debris because you only drill holes in the dirty side of the air box - ie. holes in the lid that covers the filter and is up-stream of it. Any part of the air box down-stream (filtered air) should stay exactly as it is.

Before my C2, I had a C4 on which I drilled a series of holes in the Airbox cover. Didn't like it. I had lots of resonance. When I got my C2, I swore not to do it, until a used Airbox cover came up on eBay. After buying that, I cut the entire front off it (just like the Cup cars used). Much better, no resonance, just some nice induction roar when accelerating hard. The best bit is I can easily switch back to the stock cover at any time.
 
The airbox on my RS has a huge section cut out of it anyway, I am told it came from the factory like this.

I think the biggest factor in the intake is the fact that the engine is breathing hot air from the engine bay rather than fresh cold air from an intake fed from the outside, so very little to be gained by changing covers, panel filters etc.
 
I just bought a fabspeed carbon airbox cover.....same as cutting the side off the original.
Any mods should be done with the fitment of a K&N or BMC performance filter, as they're more durable (metal mesh). The fabspeed one is great & was just $175 plus $45 TNT shipping (shared with a mate, as we ordered 2).
Highly recommended.

Or buy a spare cover for GBP15 and cut it away - I did, no performance difference but a nice noise when pushed and easy to retro fit the original. I didn't get any resonance etc.
