Hi guys

As titled i am hopefully picking up a 1999 996 C2 on the weekend, its got quite high mileage which doesn't put me off massively as the price reflects it.

It's done 139k but had a engine change done at 79k miles with all auxilleries done at the same time.
Its had the following replaced recently :

Feb 09 - New clutch inc RMS and intermediate seal fitted by Porsche centre Cardiff
Oct 09 - Rebuilt gearbox by Sports & Classic
July 08 - New Rads to front
New air con condensers
New disc and pads to front recently.
New drop links, lower suspension arm and top mounts
New Conti N2's to front 2 months ago
New Conti N2's to rear 1 week ago

All the paper work is said to be in place for the work, is there anything else you guys would advice me to look out for...

i'm qutie a picky person and i like to think i can pick out obvious thing with cars, i'm normally the person that finds faults in mates car once they've bought them lol

Only other issues i can think of are;

Check rear discs, particularly inside surfaces for pitted metal/deep scoring
Check water level in expansion tank as the tank itself can split
Check seams around exhaust/muffler
Think about fitting grilles to the front pu as damage occurs quickly to air con rads through stones etc
I have had to replace my key alarm twice in four years as they break too easily.

Looks like all the expensive jobs have been done though,
Have fun

Take a look at our buyer's check list here: http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=269468. It covers most of the things to look for on a 994.

hi dont let the milage worry you i have a128000 miler on original engine and every thing is fixable apart for accident damage so have agood look at the body so have fun

After it came in with 153K and a cracked liner - I bought my 996 and rebuilt the engine and it now has 155K on it and is absolutely superb - everything works correctly and the engine is fine, bodywork great, seats etc very good and it drives well - 27mpg on a run and very little oil consumption (getting better as the rings bed into the re-rounded cylinder bores).

A high mileage 996 with a recent new or rebuilt engine makes a superb car and excellent value for money - they can do the mileages as long as the engine (and sometimes a few other parts) are repaired or replaced when they need to be.

Thanks for the posts guys, definitely fills me with more confidence.

As with most things in life it will be a case sucking an seeing lol I definitely see the car having a new engine in there as a very good thing seeing as its a common problem plus the IMS have been done.

Hopefully the guy will be honest about oil consumption, is it quite esy to see the water header tank? best way to inspect it? is it just checking for cracks etc..

With the car on 140k but the engine on 70k ish i'm prepared for doing niggly jobs with rubbers/belts/bushes etc need attention. The high miles dosen't put me off as any thing that should have gone wrong probably has eh..

The cars also got a Jaquemond spoiler which i love the look of, at first i thought i really wanted one with a GT3 spoiler but my heads been turned.

I will probably only do about 4k a year in it and even that would be a push as i have a 1983 944, 600cc hornet and a Trek road bike also at my disposal, GREEDY i know lol..

Dont worry too much about header tank. You can see it on passengers side of engine. Its just one of those things that can go. If bulkhead to the side is dry and water is clear then it should be fine. All sounds really good. Richard and Min give expert advice if needed, they have helped me out many times.

Well saturday finally arrived, i was barely able to sleep all week...

And YES i bought it!!

Can't stop smiling, the car was in great shape and everything you guys mentioned plus EVERYTHING on the buyers check list has been done on the car in the last 2 years, the car litterally needs nothing, apart from a regular minor service in june/july.

It Vesuisus Grey, its got the GT3 PU front and side skirts and a Jaquemond rear bumper. No orange bits on the lights etc, i know what your think yes i do need to post up some pics lol. I will try get some up this week.

The car needs a good detail- clay bar and a session with my Kestral polisher and then it really will be ready for the summer.

The seller was a really top bloke, seriously loved the car but needed to sell for something bigger. I so glad i bought private as he knew the car inside and out and every piece of paperwork was in order.
I like to think when your selling a car your very much selling apart of your life, he had it 6 years which i also liked.

One of the best feelings driving it back was ever since i was a toddler i can remember driving past the Porsche garage in Chiswick and as i got older i wondered would i ever have a Porsche, i know i have a 944 but its just not the same as saying I have a 911.

Off to the Arsenal game now so hope my good weekend continues...lol

Really pleased you love the car - fantastic value and one to really enjoy! I am sure you will treasure it.

Shame about your team though - but at least mine got a point [;)][:D][:D][:D]

just remember your always going to see horror stories for any model Porsche on the net and on forums, its only the problems that make it online.
Porsche dont build bad engines, I have had 944s, 996s, 997s and never had any major issues, only apart from slight oil leak on the 996 which was nothing.
Just remember your buying a 99, 996 with high miles so your going to find faults, that said a Porsche can run forever as a recent guy proved with his 350,000 mile 996 carrea 2.
regardless I am sure you will have huge fun in the 996
