Horn with a mind of its own.

I have a problem with a late 924S, the horn has decided that it will only work on its own terms, and these are sporadic at best. I am sure the fault lies at the interface of the steering wheel and the column. With the steering wheel off I can short the horn mechanism at the top of the column and it works every time (great for the horn, but not practical as steering the car is very difficult![;)]) however with the steering wheel in place the horn will generally only work with the steering wheel turned to the left, and only the right hand side of the horn push works. If I then rock the wheel, there is a tiny amount of movement, I can stop the horn working completely. The steering wheel is correctly tightened and fitted. I am at a loss now as what to do. Has anyone any ideas?

When you take the centre of the steering wheel boss off back the centre nut off to allow you to take the wheel off against it.
(Both hand simultaneously banging from behind. Leaving the nut partially in place stops it from coming off and hitting you... Don't ask how I know!!!)
From memory this exposes the slip ring track which is probably filthy and thus makes very poor contact. A small piece of 100 grade wet and dry will bring up a nice shine - then do the same for the slip ring contact on the underside of the steering wheel. Also make sure that it's free to move on its spring.
Reassemble and take it out for a nice test drive to try it out.

Steve, thanks for the response but I have cleaned all the contacts and made sure everything is touching
and as clean as can be so I don't think it is dirty contacts.

Hi Peter,
in that case it could be that the contact with the spring behind it may not be as free as it could be.
If that is sticking at the 'high' spot it won't slide to make contact with the ring if the ring is not even all the way round - if that makes sense.
I had the same prooblem with mine, but a thoroughly could clean - such as you've done - plus an attack with the ubiquitous WD-40 did the trick.

I`ve had this with my 924 and`44 and cleaned everything as Steve has suggested, but rather than WD40 I used a smear of Vaseline as it`s the only grease that I know of that conducts electricity and won`t run off like WD40.
It always used to act up whenever the MOT was due, but (touch wood)hasn`t happened for a few years.

The horn on my old 924 used to play up regularly.I thought it was due to the connections/springs on the horn pad but it turned out to be a very poor earth wire much further down the steering column.
