Horn with a mind of it's own?

Interesting query for you. never had a problem before but took car out last nite and my horn has seemed to develop a mind of it's own, deciding to sound every so often. Anyone had this problem before or any ideas where I should start looking as I am at a bit of a loss. The only obvious way of solving it in the short term would be to remove the fuse but I don't know if it controls other things too?

Help?? [8|]

Could be a dozen things ... sounds like you need to go a-huntin' with a multimeter and see what you can find.

Is it the standard steering wheel, or an aftermarket one? A failed horn-push-button would be a reasonable first suspect.

Snag with all intermittant faults is that they won't present themselves when you want them to ...

It's a standard steering wheel. Everything was fine when I drove it the other night and seemed ok again on the way home last nite. Looks like I may have my work cut out then eh?

Pull the front off (grab hold and pull hard and keep your nose away from it!) and see if the wire for the horn is in place, broken, loose etc.
By disconnecting it you should stop the horn working for a quiet life but you will need to get it sorted. You never need a horn until you haven't got one!
I bought a CS wheel which sounded the horn constantly to begin with. Took an hour and a few bits of insulation tape to stop the circuit being made and have it work properly.

Yup, this chap is doing what I would do. Look at the wheel first. Make sure that there isn't any junk in the switch on the wheel (I think the switch is part and parcel of the clip-on front, have a look and you'll see what I mean.) Then check the wires there.

It's also worth checking that there isn't something causing a short in the moving contact behind the wheel. The circuit that is 'made' when you press the horn button comprises of the steering column and a moving contact on a slip ring behind the wheel. If there is something causing a short between this moving contact behind the wheel and the steering column then you will make the horn sound. So ... have a good look behind there and make sure there isn't something loose floating around.

whether or not it is the problem, i have noticed that one of the springs behind the horn push is missing... probably isn't helping. Have removed the fuse for the moment and will investigate further [:)]
