Horns and Oil leaks!

Two problems I could do with some help on please. 1990 C4 RHD (c16)

First: The low tone horn has stopped working. I figure that this will need replacing as they usually stop because they are broken (and because the high pitched horn sounds silly on its own). The only thing I want to know is where it's sited. It sounds like it is mounted in drivers side front wing. Before I take anything apart I would just like someone to confirm that this is where the horn lives.

Second: I have developed an oil leak around the oil thermostat (oil drips under drivers side rear wheel arch) it looks like it's coming from the pipe that goes from the oil thermostat to the oil filter. This pipe has a metal section which screws onto the oil thermostat. Do I need any special tools to do this at home AND while I am (or a specialist) is doing this should I consider changing all the other rubber oil pipes (given that they are likely to be 16 years old) that run to the oil tank and so forth. The pipes that run to the front oil cooler were replaced 2/3 years ago when the oil cooler was also replaced.

Thank you.

Chris,

First: Yes, the horns are in the RH front wheel well. You'll have to remove the arch liner and they are on their own little bracket if you look top right under the wheel arch.

Second: The oil pipe connections to the thermostat have a reputation for being very difficult to undo. I think the decision to replace depends on the condition of the existing pipes. I'd be tempted to get your specialist to look at them (and the leak) and go from there.

Dave

Cheers Dave.

I didn't want to go through the mess of taking out the arch liner to find that there was an easier way of doing it.

It thought it was likely to be a specialist job for the oil pipes and at the end of the day I bl**dy hate having to deal with old oil. It's dirty and smelly and makes a mess when it starts to leak everywhere from the connection/drainage plug you forgot to put the drainage can(s) under. Then, even when it's safely in the can, it seems to have powers of escape that Houdini would be envious of! Besides messing with the oil lines looks like it's a real pain especially without the availability of an hydraulic lift etc.
I suppose the worst case scenario is replacing the oil thermostat and all the pipes too. I have budgeted for this and if it stops the leak then I'm happy. Looks like my suspension overhaul is going to take a back seat for a while......

Chris.

Hi,

Does the 964 have a both a low and high horn? I've seen both in catalogs and wondered if one was an upgrade.

Mine sounds like a pathetic girly/cheeky 'meep meep' so maybe I need another.

Craig

Craig (and Chris),

The toy town horn propblem on my C4 was only a bad connection, the terminals had just become corroded, spent a bit of time cleaning and crimping connectors and all is well and has been for past 10 months or so, from memory the horns come apart and i think there is an adjustable screw on the end to alter tone etc.

Hope this is of some assistance

Kevin

Thanks Kev-toytown horn about sums it up. Will set aside next weekend and let you know how it goes.

Cheers

Craig
