horrenous knocking during free wheel

Can anyone help.
My Apr1982 924 Lux has developed a horrendous knocking which I can best describe as if one of the rear wheels hasn't had its nuts tightened. The noise only occurs when no torque is applied, so the noise occurs during a gentle gear change, when the clutch is depressed during free wheeling, or when no pedal is depressed (coasting). The noise does not occur under acceleration and I have not noticed it under firm breaking. The noise is audible inside and outside the car. It feels as if it is coming from the rear of the car.
I would greatly appreciate suggested tests I might conduct to diagnose the problem.
Regards,
Matthew

Here's an easy one for starters, grab hold of the driveshafts and rag them around to see if there's any play in the CV joints. It may be that they're worn and free to fly around and rattle during coasting, during accelleration and possibly braking the balls would be pressed against their running surfaces and therefore silent.

May not be the cause but dead easy to test.

I had a similar problem with my Turbo some years ago. The noise was horrendous. It was worse when turning under deceleration.
I stripped the CV joint and repacked them with grease. No more noise and another 20K + miles on the clock.

Sorry to state the obvious, but is everything secured in the boot space? I had the spare tyre knocking in certain road conditions. Exhaust fixings is another common problem, so check all your fixings.

The smart money is on passenger side CV joint (if the exhaust runs near the joint) - No point just doing the one side, do both whilst you are at it.

Cheers,
