Hot & bothered Part II

Afternoon All,

Ok got the exhaust back on and refiller the water following my removal of thermostat. I have got the airlocks out and bled the air from the release bolt.

Started it up and it runs fine, but get hot.....

The radiators are boiling hot and the fans aren't kicking in. I've had to switch off as it was getting into the red.

So I checked the fuse (F10) and tried swapping the relay (I had a spare), but to no avail.

So does anyone know where the sensor is for the radiator fans?

Looking for ideas....

Sensor for radiator fans is screwed into radiator - from memory i think it is at the bottom right hand side (when viewing radiator from the front)

Right I've found the culprit!

It was the radiator thermal switch, Clarks threw me a wobbler by telling me to look on the drivers side.....
Of course had it been LHD they were right, but it's well hidden on the passenger side below the top hose.

When I short it out... Bingo the fans cut in.

So I'm wiring it thru to a switch on the dash, the driver can control it.

You are better off to replace the thermoswitch rather than wiring in a manual control. The switches are available from the dealer or many internet sellers. Just be sure you get the correct one for your year as the operating temperatures and plug connector differ on late models from early (early has two pins for separate wires - late model has 3 pins and uses a single 3 pin connector). Much better to have cooling that works automatically rather than having to search for your manual switch half way through a fast corner :)

 
Agreed - it’s such a simple change it’s a no brainer to sort it the factory way. I could understand having a manual override switch IN ADDITION to the automatic switch on a race car but not as a replacement.
 
Just replaced my fan switch a few weeks back...5 minute job and IIRC the switch cost less than £15

Do you need to drain the coolant to do this? Presumably not if it only took a few mins?

No David...we lost very little coolant doing this job...just have the new switch ready to put straight in

You can do it from above or below - you will lose very little coolant as has been said.

It‘s easier/quicker to do from below but you’ll be drier if you do it from above - ask me how I know!
