hot, hot, hot

The cotswold rally was my first big run in my newly acquired 944 S2. I noticed that the transmission tunnel around the gearstick gets very warm during a long, spirited run. In fact the whole central tunnel and footwells get quite warm. Is this normal?

The exhaust runs under the torque tube, so if you heat that up then itll radiate through the transmission tunnel and the drivers floor.

Mine was like that when I first bought it. Turns out the it was the heater stuck in the default hot position. I thought ecactly the same mate. I'll bet that is what your problem is. I'd check that out if I were you mate.

I don't think it's the heating stuck in hot. The temp setting knob is not very accurate, but works and if I turn it right down it does blow cool (ambient temp) air.
I'm thinking I ought to check that all the exhaust pipe heat deflectors are in place (are there any?)

Yes, there are exhaust pipe heat deflectors, but they are a fiddle to get to.

The central tunnel gets hot. Always. I wouldn't worry about it (unless the carpet starts smoking, or worse ... )

Okay, thank you Oli. Puts my mind at rest.

The transmission tunnel on my S2 runs hot as said before the exhaust runs underneath so heats it up, you will probably find the noise reducing foam that should be under the gear stick around the torque tube has disintergrated which would keep the heat and noise levels down a little, I think you can buy a replacement around £60 if I remember correctly.

My old lux used to feel worryingly hot after a hard run. Never let me down though so I assumed it was normal.

I asked this with my S2, as it was way hotter than my Lux. It was cured when I had the new exhaust fitted, I don't know if that was the problem, or they fiddled with the heat shields whilst they were at it.

My old Westfield had ally panels along the centre tunnel and it was baking just from engine heat (the exhaust was a front side exit) - you dont know what hot is [8|]

Mine got warm to the touch even through the carpet.

This is why Barry spent a considerable amount of time refitting all the firewall and front of tunnel heat deflectors. At first we where going to leave it off but then heard that a number of racers had complained about the car getting very hot, since this stuff doesn't weigh much it wasn't really any loss to get it all back on. Paul is correct one has to consider the amazing amount of energy being generated, on a track its probably equivalent to 150 KW of which typically 20%+ goes out the exhaust or 30 KW. That is a hell of a lot of heat.
