Hot Start Problem.

My 1987 coupe has developed a hot start problem.... Basically the car will start and run fine without any issues what so ever, but as soon as it gets hot... if you turn off the ignition, it refuses to start and the starter just spins but it will just not fire. However there is a smell of fuel from the exhaust. If I let the car cool for 30-60 mins it starts first time and runs fine again until I turn the ignition off again..

And before anyone says.. I have tried a new DME Relay... It has also had a recon ECU less than 12 Months ago..

A couple of specialists have suggested that it could be the sensor on no3 cylinder head.. I have looked in the Bentley bible which details what the sensor should be reading at different temperatures, but am unsure how to actually test this or replace the sensor....

Has anyone out there any ideas or suggestions...

Thanks in advance....

It could be the fuel accumulator, one of it's jobs is to help solve hot start problems.

It could certainaly be the cylinder head temperature sensor.

Its quite easy to test. I'm at work right now so I cant recall the detail but if you email me I'll look up the procedure and let you know.

I had exactly the same problem with my 88 3.2 I tried the DME first. Had the fuel pressure tested plus just about everything else. It turned out to be the crank sensor. The part cost about Gbp 70.00 through trade and another Gbp 60.00 for fitting (make sure this is done correctly - you'll know if its not the correct 8mm from the flywheel as the engine won't rev properly!) Anyway, touch wood my hot start problem has since been solved (and I now have a spare DME relay!) Good luck!

It gets complicated doesn't it? Having spent quite a few years tuning two strokes (a black art) I find four stroke engines fairly simple but since electronic control of just about every parameter has inevitably come to be maybe it's time to hook it up to a diagnostic device and see whats happening there.
