How are your refurbished Mags?

Knowing that refurbished Magnesium wheels can show problems after a period.
(including the use of a dry stripping method)
I am keen to know of the best finish and longevity, that you have experienced, especially from Diamond Styling.

Well, I have a very nice set which were not refurbished by Diamond Styling (they were on the car when I bought it but I know the wheels didn't go to Diamond --- but may have gone to Metal Magic (who don't do mags ? ! --- don't ask me !).

Had a set of R888's fitted after the Cup Sports. When the weights were removed from the inner rim it stripped the coating (so painted and waxed) and on the track the coating started walking off the rim --- by which I mean that the flexing of the tyre seemed to drag the coating from inside the rim to the outside, leaving a blister of coating on the outside. Now trimmed off and waxed.

I will have them refurbished at some stage, though maybe not until the end of the trackday season.

My Diamond Styling wheels have barely been used, so I can't comment, but they look very nice.

Jason, i had my mags refurbed and painted black by Diamond Styling about 6 or 7 years ago. Been on the car ever since in all weathers. Still seem okay.

Regards
Martin

I had my mags refurbed by Diamond Styling - started bubbling and flaking within 3 months (after 2 track days) and finish was ok (rather than good). For the price, I was expecting much better. To be fair, they did offer to take them back and have another go but the first effort wasn't confidence inspiring.

Thanks guys.

Phil, I am yet to be convinced by anyone so far.
Pristine, on Tuesday I will have a verdict from a friend (Ex. Paint man) who has had his magnesium (not RS) wheels done by Pristine (whilst there, he asked about my wheels and they recommended somewhere else!!!!!, which I am chasing up)
I expect you saw Richard's (RSGulp) results.

Just to confuse matters, there is this thread:

Jason,

As you're aware I had my mags refurbished by Pristine about 6 weeks ago. I think they did a very good job but as always with magnesiums only time will tell. David is the owner of Pristine and when we visited with the Porsche Club he was very enthusiastic about the entire set-up, their multi-stage process and quality control.

I asked them to go easy on the raised lettering around the rim. They decided the best approach would be to mask the lettering at various stages using small rectangles of tape. They masked for the first of two coats of primer, then masked again for the first of two coats of paint. There is a very slight rectangular indent in places around the lettering on certain but I'm happy as the words are still clearly visible and haven't 'filled-in' like I've seen on other refurbed wheels.

I'm surprised the person you spoke to at Pristine would recommend you took them elsewhere - they were very willing to do mine to show me how good they are, and probably so I would report back to the Club and perhaps they would get more Porsche Club business. And after meeting David, I'm sure he'd be surprised his employees were telling you to take them elsewhere too.

I'm very happy with my wheels, and I am known to be a fussy bügger.

If you'd like to see my wheels before making your decision drop me an email. I'll be at Castle Combe next Sunday for the breakfast meet.

thanks,i have had them sent to pristine should be with them later this week,i see most recomend not to acid dip them,i have sent them a email to not dip mine and use less paint on the lettering also..

I repainted my mags myself & they lasted about 5 to 6 years before the paint started to bubble slightly. Cost less than £10 per wheel in materials & a little time. I removed the old blistered paint using wet & dry paper with water avoiding removing the original primer where possible. 1 coat etch primer, 1 coat white primer, 1 coat silver, 1 coat clear laquer. The only patches to bubble are areas where the original primer was removed & it is the top coat coming off the primer. This time I will heat any bare metal areas with a hot air gun or similar to ensure thorough drying & see if they last longer.

Chris, not as much as i'd like (can afford), but 'yes'.

Quite understood Martin -- I am trying so hard not to break mine --- and burnt 80 litres of fuel and did a 1'3rd set of tyres at Croft.

I only reconcile myself to the idea that at my advancing age a certain Mr Brown (not of "mate to Victoria" fame) is paying 40% of it and if I die before I get old, it will be enjoying myself ...

I can show you a set of wheels that have been acid dipped --- they currently have a set of PSCups on them and will be next on my CS once the R888's are done. Like the Grand Canyon, though strangely less then 20g weight difference between the four --- maybe they are now the true lighteight versions ?
