How do I adjust the Door Handle "Trigger "

My drivers side door only just opens. The "trigger" lever pulls right into the handle and only in the last milimetre or so does it just open the door.

I cant see how to adjust this and the 2 manuals I have don't show me.

Can anyone advise please ? David

David, it may be that the trigger part of your door handle has snapped, it's an alloy material with a steel pivot pin running through and failures are quite commonplace. Try and have a look at the reverse of the handle and see if there is an obvious crack. If so, your best bet would be to try and source either a second hand trigger assembly or a complete used door handle unit - new ones are around £200 and the trigger isn't available seperately.

If it's not the trigger then adjustment is limited because the inner latch mechanism is a sealed unit. Over time the grease in it dries out, new life can be breathed into an old mechanism by removing all the old grease and giving it a good clean, then regreasing. It's a right fiddly job removing the mechanism though.

If you need to change either the mechanism or the handle then you have to de trim the door, relatively straightforward but a bit time consuming.

If you take off the door cards/panels and look at the mechanism from inside the door there is a piece that moves that has a C clip on it. Maybe the C clip is loose or missing.

Compare one door to the other to make sure all is as it is meant to be.

You ought to add the year of your car to your name or signature, it makes answering questions easier.

You will see that I have based my answer on experience with early cars. '81 to '84 model years.

Yes, broken trigger where the pin goes through. Just waiting for a second hand handle now.

Thanks for the help.

I had all the trim off the door to fit a repair kit where the door retaining strap had ripped out of the metal. I bought a repair kit, so I guess it is a common problem - too HOURS to do, but once I had straightened out all the torn metal inside the door the new pieces clamped it all together nicely. The kit is expensive though !
