How do I remove the alternator air duct?

[FONT=verdana,geneva"]I've got the front PU off to fit an oil cooler (on the n/s where the horns usually go)

I'm trying to get the plastic alternator air duct off - I can't see where the lower fixing is. Is there an easy way to do this, or will I have to take lots of things apart to get access?

I could just chop it off as it's not doing anything, but I'd like to do it properly

Ed, I can't picture seeing that when i fitted the rectangular air ducts to the front of mine (missing off the last turbos) nor when I swapped the A/C condensor out? I've had a look at the PET, but can't see anything. What does it look like?
 
If you mean the duct on the back of the alternator then you need it or the heat thrown out by the turbo will eventually cause the alternator to fail. It's held on by 3 or 4 tiny nuts, maybe 6mm. I've only ever removed it with the alternator off the car so I can't help with access.

If it's something else then I don't recall my car having it at all.
 
Part no 944 603 441 00 (page 340 of PET) - It has one bracket at the front & one underneath (the one I can't reach easily)

Mine directs air somewhere underneath the ac compressor at the moment - nowhere near the alternator! I just have the plastic bit & not the flexi hose
 
The bracket underneath holds on a stud soldered on the inside of the left side member.
 
Thanks Thom - is it secured by a nut? I can't feel anything

I guess I'll have to get right under the car with the belly pans off
 
As far as I can remember there is a plastic strap holding some wrapped cables that sits on this stud. You have to pull it off first in order to take off the bracket of the duct.
 
Are you fitting the kit with the Mocal oil cooler as sold by Paragon Products ?

Are you fitting it the same way as Rick with the horns just behind it ?

Would like to see some pictures.
 
I bought a Setrab cooler & bits from Think Auto - I don't know how Rick did his (and his site is down). I didn't know Paragon did a kit.

I'm fitting it in series with the stock cooler, which i think is not operating very effectively. Pre & post cooler oil temps on track recently were both 130C!

I will take pics & post in a separate thread next week.

I have removed the horns - not sure what I'll do yet but may just use a single horn.
 
Hmmm .... I'm not sure how this cooler looks like but if there is enough room left you might be able to use the vertical plate soldered on the shell to attach the horn bracket to it.
 
That's what I'm thinking - either 1 or 2 horns right in the n/s front corner.

I see now that paragon sell the KISS kit. FWIW, my bits cost about the same (GBP 190 all in). this is for a 210mm, 19 row cooler. I'm going to mount it sideways so that I can drain it during oil changes. (if I can be bothered)
 
I guess if you install it higher than the original and maybe angle it slightly then you might be able to get it so it drains automatically without the need drain it seperately.

Can you buy new oil coolers that effectively fit in the original position? I'm thinking that a simple replacement with a new more efficient modern equivalent would be more than man enough for the job.
 
or maybe slightly lower than the original.....

the std cooler is a bit of a strange shape - I don't think you'd get much to fit in that space with the PS cooler alongside
