How do we get more of the region using this Forum

Perhaps at some future meeting, we might show people (via laptop / mobile) just how easy it is ? Also whilst many of us have PC's at home / work they are initimidated by the concept or just need some help to get on the forum.

(Of course, they have been on already and thought it was not of value..[:(])

Thoughts to increase R10 traffic ? Post them here.

Rgds

I suppose the first thing is to find out how many people in the region are online? If we brought a laptop to events then you might be able to get them to register and subscribe to the northants forum messages maybe.

How about looking at some permanent content, local places for service and the like. If the forum were used like a mini website with some useful resources I think people would be more inclined to visit.

Is it that people are looking but not participating or are they just not looking. If they aren't looking then this wouldn't help, but it's always worth a go.

If you are thinking about having a laptop available at the local meeting, may I suggest that you hold it at somewhere like Starbucks that has highspeed wireless comms. If your at the Navigation, connected via blueetooth, then I hate to say it but it's going to be so slow that even I'd get bored waiting after a couple of minutes. (This might not be a good advert).

A do at OPC Silverstone might be an idea and negotiate the use of one their machines which are WWW connected?

good question i've tried and tried over the past year and a half and to be honest i've given up.

the R/Os say whats the point as none of our members don't look at the forum. and the members say whats the point theres no information on it.....

chicken and egg!!!!

If the information is placed on the Forum, and people are told that is where it will be, then they will use it.

What annoys me is those that should be promoting the forum, but they say "there's nothing on it because I use xyz" (where xyz is the forum that they used to use before the PCGB one came along). Does xyz forum have PCGB info on? No!
So use the "other" forum if your mates are there, but post PCGB info here!

Is it that difficult?[&:]

Interesting comment about speed. My PC is GPRS so that helps a little...as long as I can find a node in the village. Anyhow - good points well made.

There is a good atmosphere in this forum, people are clearly friendly and know each other but it is a bit daunting for some people if they are just a casual visitor - it can feel a bit like butting into a conversation.

Personally it doesn't overly bother me because I'm pretty thick-skinned but the best way to overcome it is the outside activity to make people welcome and bring them to the forum. Decent content will keep them there.

I'm sure a lot more people read the posts than actually join in.

I am a porsche owner from this region but have allowed my PCGB membership to expire,i will be renewing soon and i find this forum very helpful and informative.
Does its address and existance appear in the Porsche Post?

Hmmm.

Not exactly. This months issue has www.porscheclubgb.com on the 1st page (along with the other contact details), and there is a link from there to the forum. So unless you have seen the articles now and again in past issues you peobably would not know the forum existed...

New members are not going to know about it.

Perhaps there ought to be something more prominent repeated every month on say, the Region and Register contact details pages?

and that brings us nicely back to R/Os and R/Ss using the forum and mentioning the forum in their bits of PP so that members get to hear about if and come and have a look.

it's got to be down to the officials of the club to lead the way.

Oh I agree.
It is a good point though that the facilities available to club members are not actually mentioned in PP unless you go searching (over many issues and time).

A single page of member benefits/resources, in every issue, might be an idea?

Can't we get that chap who's hasn't got a portfolio to talk to that chap who communicates things?
And they can go off to a board meeting together and say "do you know, our members don't know what they actually have available from the club".

Just a thought!

Forgive quoting your last comments Helen, but I'm getting a bit hacked off with this thread and the implication that people are not aware of the forum. I mention the forum in every monthly report in PP; at each Monthly Meeting AND highlight the forum to our new members in a welcome letter. We have had more posts and "hits" than most other Regions on the forum.

I'm not complacent (but probably getting tired). Like Mike Walsh, I believe many people choose to read, not post. There is no "evidence" that they have been there, but they still look. As long as useful info is posted, then it should help our members. If it turns into a "chat room" for non-porsche related matters or politics (such as this), then it risks putting people off visiting the site. (There are chat rooms within the general forum). Why are we discussing amongst the "computer-users" here the habits and desires of the current perceived "non-users"? Maybe we need to ask this question at meetings and in PP.

As Mike points out, he is an RO that actually does use and promote the forum, so maybe the discussion about that is rather irrelevant in this area of the site.

I'm sure that, like most forums, most members just "lurk" and rarely post, so we just have to accept that is the way people want to surf.

With a little promotion in PP (as in Mikes articles, and/or as a regular listing) the use will grow. But not everyone has the inclination to jump in as soon as they log in!

Just keep posting useful stuff, and people will use it.[:)]

For what it's worth, as a new member who hasn't even been to a meeting yet I thought the forum was was well promoted and easy to find.

I do promise to come to a meeting eventually, season ends in August.

I do a lot more reading than posting.
I feel that unless I have something worth sharing (and usually I don't), then I just want to log on and check out what's happening wihtout the need to post.
I'm sure I'm not alone![;)]

Just a thought, would a web analytics package such as WebTrends be any use in getting to the bottom of how many regular users the forum had? Seems like it might be a way of seeing proportionally how many users actually post.

Another small thought if I may, there are several IT-type magazines out there who promote their related forums by including a few threads each month in the magazine - a sort of conversational Q&A column, with the content directly lifted from the forum. The forum sees discussion on a wide number of topics, perhaps the membership would like to see what they are missing out on; a small regular column in PP of this nature would be great.

On a slightly different subject it would be nice if the monthly club meetings visited the north of the county every once in a while. [;)]
