How do we know stuff?

I was asked a question earlier today which has stirred my inquisitive mind into action. There are many, tales and legends of good 944 ownership practice that we seem to just know. Such things as:-

Change your belts every three years

Replace the water pump at a 100K belt change

Keep a careful eye on the twin cam link chain tensioner

Never reset the mileometer when moving

These matters of good husbandry obviously come about through hear say as the result of someone else's misfortune but are there more definite guidelines which 944 owners should know and where would one find them?

Over to you gentlemen....

A piece of what seems common sense to me.

When I planned to have the front stripped to do a disc, backing plate & pad replacement I was going to replace the front wheel bearings on my Turbo.

Quite a lot of owners clearly dont have, or havent read the original owners handbook, as questions are regularly asked on various forums, the answers to which are contained therein. I plead guilty to that one myself! And how many garage mechanics thouroughly complete every detail of the official service guide, perhaps not all I think. If anyone would like a copy of the original owners manual, I will gladly post a photocopy, email me at kmarkwaller@aol.com its actually very informative.
Regards

Isnt it downloaded with all of the other stuff you "know" when you become a Dad?
I can now fix everything and anything because Im a "Dad"... well thats the theory anyway!

Good idea for a thread John, there are many things that we 'know' that never appear in the manuals, but the only one I can think of at the moment is:

Never to reset the mileometer when moving. There have been rumours of stripped cogs []

I've added it into your list.

....and a more flippant reply is:

Always buy anything shiny [:D]

I have to say that I think the mileometer thing is an OSWMBO's tale; either that or I have been very lucky a lot of times.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]I go with the shiny suggestion however.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]
