how do you check the camchain tensioner?

Ive just taken delivery of my absolutely gorgeous midnight blue 968 cab, and boy am I a happy bunny. (more of this, ad nauseam, later perhaps). The car is "blessed" with a full main dealer service history which includes a 48k service about 18m ago, presumably at which time the cambelts were replaced(?). However I read in various places that the OPC 48k service does not include checking the camchain tensioner and that if this goes then its new camshafts time.
I have a fairly comfortable knowledge of what goes wrong with 944/968s and what they need, having cut my teeth on an elderly 944, but the actual mechanical skills are beyond me. My question is, can an independent do a camchain tensioner check without necessarily doing a full blown "belts" service - since the car has just had a 12k done it seems daft to repeat it all.

again thanks to all for the advice. Ive now left post-purchase paranoia and am back in euphoria stage. What an absolutely blindingly good car the 968 is. My God, the handling! A very very happy bunny am I...but not so euphoric that I'll forget to get the cambelts checked
