How do you mount yours ?

Hello to all.

Initiation time (!) - having owned a 964RS for just under a year now, I am starting to look at ways that I can improve the safetly aspect of track day driving. Having attended several RMA days last year (mainly at Bedford) I have noticed that a lot of other RS's have fire extinguishers mounted just ahead of the passenger seat. My car already has a full bolt-in roll cage and 4 point harnesses so a extinguisher would complete the picture.

Please could you advise me if you have such mountings in your cars and where you purchased from ?. I would also quite like to purchase some heel and toe specific pedals - any suggestion (apart from improving my technique and using the standard ones !) ?.

Cheers

Steve

Hi Steve

There should be some bolt holes in the central rib in the passenger footwell for a fire extingusiher mounting.

I bought a Sparco pedal set, but in the end just used one on the brake pedal, slightly off set (so have two spare if you want to experiment! Will pop them in post if u require) . But be warned, those original pedals are extraordinarliy tough -I got through two drill bits. BTW, you have to take the rubber bit off!

On the accelerator pedal, glue on another rubber to bring the level up.

And then heal and toe away!!!

Hi Steve

I was also having a little trouble making heel and toe down shifts due to the height/space difference between brake and accelerator pedals. Mels fix definitely works but I went for a slightly easier alternative which is just as effective.

I made an extension to the accelerator pedal out of a block of wood and bolted it onto the existing accelerator pedal which is made of plastic and easy to drill. Block was a bit wider so reduced the pedal gap and the 2cm thick to bring the pedal height up. Keeps brake pedal in a more central poition (my car is LHD so moving it to the right would offset the driving position further). You can experiment quite easily with width/thickness of the block and it is also very easy to install - cut the block to required size, drill block and accelerator using a template, fix to pedal with bolt.

It can also be removed very easily and all you are left with is 2 very small holes in the accelerator pedal. Took me about an hour this morning and makes heel and toe shifts much easier. Looking forward to my next track day so I can try it properly.

More detailed description is found on this web site.

If you want to go down the prettier but more expensive option, pelican parts have a pedal set with a tab on the accelerator to fascilitate heel and toe changes. Not cheap at nearly US$200 + tax + shipping + fitting!!

Steve,

Similarly I had autofarm put a blank pedal over the original and "pad the screws that join them together with washers until the position was just right.

Also....did you go to the RS day at JZ? and live in the midlands....is yours the Showcar from essen or somewhere? If so drop me a line with your contact details cos your missing a load of good midlands region runs!

my accelerator pedal has 2nd rubber on it to bring it up in height, but no changes to brake pedal - no probs with heel & toe - and that with dainty size 9's as well...might be worth trying that first before fitting Mels Max Power pedal covers...[;)]
(s'also easier & quicker than Lawrence Llewellyn Feroz's 'changing rooms' style MDF solution [:D])

Hi!

Just read that some of you have a 2nd rubber on the throttle pedal. What do you mean by this? Any pics?

Thanks!

Andy...wanting to be able to heel-toe!

Double the protection in case one brakes(sic)....[;)]

It's an accelerator rubber glued directly on to the top of the existing to bring the accel upto the level of the brake pedal.

Its actually plastic and needs slight trimming but fits straight over the top.

James,

Mine isn't the Essen car - I've seen some pics and can remember reading an article on it somewhere (maybe 911&PW).
I've got a LHD flower yellow example, pretty standard apart from a AMD re-chip, cat by-pass, full cage & harnesses. I've been very lucky with mine as it's in very good condition. The previous owner only tracked the car once, and spent the rest of the time detailing it so the paintwork/wheels/interior are all in good condition.

If anyone else is interested I found a fire extinguisher mount at http://www.porscheshop.co.uk/acatalog/performance_safety_hardware_porsche_cars.html#a3603 which bolts against the seat track. Now looking for a suitable 2.5lb extinguisher to mount to it.

Thanks for everyone's suggestion regarding heel and toe pedals. I am gonna try the "blank pedal over the original" suggestion. If that fails to improve my technique then I'll go for the flash Rennline pedals advertised on the pelicanparts website (thanks Yoda).

May see some of you on a trackday this season - I'll be the one bunny-hopping down the pit lane as I get used to my new pedal arrangement !.
