How do you remove the wings??

Hi guys,

I wish to remove the wings to check beneath them. I tried at the weekend but I did not have long and could not seem to manage it. I took the bolts out along the inner edge of the engine bay and also a bolt from under the wheel arch and one under the wing itself (sill) but it was still stuck fast.

Are there further bolts only accessible by removing the front valance? I have had no luck seaching Clarks garage.

Many thanks.

You haven't mentioned the bolt on the on the leading edge of the wing that joins it to the badge panel, you need to lift the lights and pull out the rubber headlamp wiper to get at it. Its been years since I changed a wing on mine but I do remember the body seal was quite tough.

Be doubly certain that you have removed every bolt, and then prise. Originals wings carry a lot of sealant, which acts like glue along the inner wing join.

Cheers fellas.

I did not remove that bolt James, will try again.

The sealant did seem quite tough but I did not dare apply too much force in case I had not removed all bolts. I obviously hadn't!

Cheers

There are the visible ones at the top of the wing-
as said the one that bolts to the badge panel under rubber flap,
then remove inner wing liner
there are a few that attach to the front spoiler
and finally, three that attach the back of the wing to the A pillar- usually partly hidden under sealant..

As said above the sealer is very thick, use a hot air gun on the join at the top of wing/inner wing and where wing meets a pillar, this will soften the sealer and the wing will pull away. Don't forget to disconnect side repeater.

Jeez mate, your car will be completely bare at this rate, why not just ride around in a chassis with a seat on it !!!

Tell me about it bud [:'(]

Im getting water leaks from 3 places.

1) passenger footwell near boot release lever (need wing off to try and figure out how water is getting here)
2) both rear footwells.

I feel like im driving a stripped out rally car. [&:]

Its a steep learning curve as ive never really tinkered with cars before.

Are you really sure you want to take those wings off? The underseal will be pretty solid, and the chances of you getting the wings off without distorting (i.e. ruining) them are ... well, not small but there is no guarantee that you won't spoil them in the process.

If you are only taking them off speculatively to look behind them then I could suggest some better things to look at. (A nice Rembrant or perhaps some large pictures of Lucy Liu without much clothing on.)

I have a picture of Lucy Liu.
OK, and I am sure the PM system is working very nicely. Why don't you send it to me? (Or are you saying that all the wings are nicely attached to your cars because you have a picture of Lucy Liu? If so, I completely understand, sir!)

Nick, I jest not. I fear you aren't taking this matter seriously enough.

Chill out Oli, Lucy is never serious when she pops round ours. It's always light hearted fun, no strings [;)]

Someone made the point about the 3 bolts (13mm IIRMC) that hold the wing onto the A-pillar. These are obscured by the heavy plastic inner wing liner which has to be removed first.

Another point that I found when removing the driver's wing to access the ABS pump is that the pump can make access difficult to these bolts as can the short plastic channel that pushes water out of the scuttle over the top of the pump = ensuring the windscreen area of the car drains well down the a-pillar.

If the wing(s) have never been off before - good from an integrity/ lack of accidents history - you will have problems with the underseal !

Good luck !

I'm pretty sure it was 10mm bolts that hold the rear of the wing onto the A pillar, and yes, an extension bar and flexible drive would make accessing the middle bolt easier as it is behind the Power steering pump, as you say and a plastic rain guard.

When I put the wing back on, i left the middle bolt off, with the sealer and all the other bolts there is plenty to keep the wing on secure.
