Hi, found Maurice's tech info. on changing caps and rotor arms.

Also think time the leads were changed ( 120k miles and can't find any service info. saying when / if they have been changed.[8|]

Can anyone let me know rough amount of time to alow for this - for an OK DIYer,
and tips on how best not to muddle the plug / lead positions![]

many thanks,

I bought new caps and rotor arms for my car with a view to changing them myself. I gave up after I couldn't get the screws undone to remove the old ones. I got my Indy to do it when the next service was due.

The onl;y tip I can offer is that you can buy Bosch caps and rotors from german & Swedish car parts for significantly less than the OPC sells them.

I've done caps & rotor arms. I had to modify [shorten!] a screwdriver so that it fitted in the confined space to get the lowest cap screw undone. I have found that with a mole wrench on the screwdriver shaft to turn it, you can keep it nicely at right angles to the axis of the screw to avoid stripping its head. Soak screws with WD40 or similar for an hour beforehand. Otherwise, easy job - just change ONE lead at a time onto the new cap and you won't get them mixed up. There are little numbers on the caps to help you.

Remove rotor arms firmly but carefully - a little bit of persuasion with carefully-applied pliers might be necessary, but watch, they are brittle and can shatter into little bits. Don't lever on anything in the distributor housing as it's delicate in there! Just push the new ones firmly onto their slots in the distributor shaft.

Leads - I've not done yet but have them waiting. Seems a fiddly but dooable job if you just do one group at a time. I wouldn't like to mix them up though & then have to sort that one out!

Good luck, hope this helps.

Thanks, Dan ... I was advised to leave the leads until the engine needed to come out ... [;)]

You can do the leads without the engine coming out, although it involves stripping most of the inlet away to achieve it. It's a complete pain of a job though!
