How essential are the light-pop-up stops?

..you know, the wishbone-like metal girder at the back of the pop-up lights, that takes up so much real-estate? If it just stops the light travel, would a single one on one side only suffice?

Reason I'm asking is that on the left hand side, I need the room for a propper sized filter..any insights appreciated
 
I'm not sure of the part your referring to but I don't think it's a mechanical end-stop. The lights work in a continuous cycle; the motor turns in one direction only and as they reach the top of their travel continued motor movement sees them move back down again, much like wipers move across and back via the mechanical linkage and not a reversal of motor direction. Consequently there is no need for an 'end-stop' as the light pods cannot be over-driven.
 
Assuming its the A shaped bit on the back, Some have removed them to make space for air filters and I have not heard of any adverse effects.

I am not sure of the purpose of it, doesn't look heavy enough to be a counterbalance or vibration damper, IIRC there is a cable tie wrapped to it but its way over engineered to be a cable support.

Hi Tony,

yep, it's the weird A-bar thing I meant. At the bottom there does seem to be an end-stop type screw (ie with exposed thread for "set depth", but since it's connected at both sides of the car, I'd have thought one was enough.. If anyone knows differently, let me know, before I do something "intelligent" with a hacksaw...
 
It's not so much a 'stop' as an added brace when the lights are up at speed.

I removed the RH side of the A shape on my nearside light to make extra room for the cone filter down there. The only noticeable effect to the lights was a bit more vibration in the beam at idle when it shone on my garage wall.
