How fast in your 997

I recently did an Aiport track day aimed at top speed on a long straight.

I am awaiting the results with interest. The highest speed the car indicated was 173 MPH but expect that to be lower when the radar times are published.

Just wondered if anyone else has got any higher.

There were some amazingly quick GT2s and Ruf 911s.

Hi sptel,
We visited Bruntingthorpe last week and it has a 2mile runway. My GT3RS from a standing start managed 192mph on the digital speedo and was still increasing but I ran out of road!
It would be interesting to know how accurate the speedo reading is and what working tollerences Porsche claim.

In my last 996 C2, I manged to get up to 162mph, on European roads, on the Cannonball 8000 in 2004. Well you do have to keep up[;)]
SOOOOOOOOOOOO impressed with the car's stance on the road[:)]

155MPH in the Boxster S - much more to come, and car VERY stable. Autobahn on the way to the 'ring.
Then I chickened out (well, the top WAS down...[:D])

Have an Origin b2 speed trap system fitted, which also notes your speed by GPS which is supposed to be very accurate. Compared with the digital speedo in the 997 it's reads 2-3mph slower consistently through the range. Which I guess is Porsche erring on the safe side.

Interstingly the Radar readout was 163, although I may have slightly lifted off through instinct at the radar trap as I had to break to do a sharp right in only 300metres. It still means the speedo is a little optimistic although not far out.

Hi John,

My speedo just nudged over 270kmp ( approx 168mph ) on the same straight. It wasn't so much that i was worried about running out of track as worried about running out of talent in the first bend !

192 - impressive, John.

Modern Porsche speedo's are pretty good. If you hold stead speed you can compare with a GPS based speed camera detector, such as Road Angel. My Boxster S was only about 3% out. Even the CS is around 5%.

HI Andy,
I was suprised by how quickly the GT3RS got up to that sort of speed. I noted that I took her to just over 180mph in 5th and then pulled to 192mph in 6th, at which point I hit the brakes, since the end of the run way was approching faster than I would have liked!!
As a comparison, I ran the 993RS down the same runway at Bruntingthorpe last year. The best I could achieve was 175mph on the clock.
What is very interesting is that both cars appeared to reach the top speeds as quoted by Porsche for these models.
Good old Germans[;)]

Hi all. Were you guys all pulling max rpm? Don't know if its a trait of German engineering but I've had a number of German cars (Vw Golf MkII and Mk IV, Passat TDI and my 3.2 911) all have maxed out in top gear and sat on the redline. In my 911 that equates to about 245 kmh (she is 17 year old!). Had a few Fords as well and in top they would never get near ther redline. Are your newer Porsches's the same where you feel like the car could handle another gear?

sorry i know mine is a 996 but:

i've had an indicated 185mph @7k (just slightly over) with 3k miles on the clock,
felt like there was a couple more mph in it.

nice and stable (3/4 tank), got a pic of the clocks with my camera phone @184mph![:D]

do find if has less than 1/4 then the front starts to feel a little light above 135

I checked my speedo with GPS. True speed seems about 1.5mph slower than indicated on the dash.

John

This sounds like a bit of fun. How does one do this? By invite only or can you pay to do it? What's the score?

Cheers Jonathan

Hi
is this a type of event that PCGB might organise?
might be popular as an alternative to a track day

Jonathan,

it's open to anyone and the cost is a very reasonable £50 per car per hour
